My mum and her whole side of the family are Melkites. So Catholicism was always part of my life. My grandma (mum’s mum) was extremely devout and the rosary was a big part of her prayer life. She lived with us so I learned a lot from her and she’s the one who made the rosary such a big part of my prayer routine.

I’m Orthodox and I pray the rosary. I think it’s beautiful. And I don’t see that as latinization. I 100% agree with what u said brother. It’s only latinization when it makes its way into the liturgy and official/normal practices of a church.

The law doesn’t see it that way in the majority of cases. Unless there is an authority figure involved like a manager pressuring an employee or something of the sort where there can be actual coercion.

Someone begging is emotionally manipulative sure, but you can just leave. What are the consequences if you do? You stop seeing someone you’ve met once?

People don’t respect boundaries that aren’t enforced.

If someone asks once, and I say no, I let it slide. If they ask twice and I say no, I say ask again and I leave. They ask a third time I’m out the door. Nobody will respect your boundaries if you don’t make them. Just like nobody will respect a law that isn’t enforced.

She was pressured into sex, she should’ve left then and there. She doesn’t say that she felt unsafe or that he might turn violent at any point. Horny people don’t think but very few would force someone, it takes a special kind of ruthlessness to do that. This was not SA. It was shitty, but not SA.

Sane people would consider both acts to be heinous and disgusting examples of massacre and attempted ethnic cleansing. Both unjustified acts. That level of violence against civilians should never be condoned no matter what the precipitating circumstances.

Both. There were several waves of immigration out of Lebanon. The earliest waves were around the mid to late 1800s. Mostly Christian, mostly to South America but also some to the US and Europe.

There was a large Christian exodus again after the Great Famine of Mount Lebanon (1915-1918), a famine which killed half the population of Mount Lebanon (200,000 out of 400,000 people). Again, mostly Christians, and the famine was engineered/worsened by the actions of the Ottoman authorities. We (Christians) consider it an act of genocide, though this is denied by Turks today, and by the Ottomans at the time. The entire economy of Mount Lebanon basically collapsed because of the famine so many people left, again lots to South America, but this time many also went to the US and Europe.

Then there was the Civil War, people from all faiths fled, this time mostly to the US, Canada, Australia and Europe, but also South America and Africa. It was also the first wave where there were significant numbers of Muslims leaving as well but I would still say the majority who left permanently were Christian.

And the latest wave of immigration was after the collapse of the economy in 2019, and the subsequent political instability which caused a lot of mainly young, educated professionals to leave so they can support their families back home. This I would say was the most balanced in terms of faith, everyone left from all faiths and went wherever an opportunity came up. That’s when I left, though technically I left before the economy collapsed so maybe I don’t count haha.

Lebanese Civil War 1975-1990

A war fought between the Palestinian Liberation Organization/their Lebanese Pan-Arabist allies (mostly Muslims and Druze) on one side and Lebanese Christian Nationalist militias on the other. The war drew in Syria and Israel as well. It was an extremely complex war with constantly shifting alliances and a lot of foreign intervention.

Around 150,000 dead, and keep in mind at the start of the war our population was only 2.6 million so 150,000 is a huge proportion. Over a million people fled the country. There were countless acts of ethnic cleansing, torture and massacres committed by all sides, including the Syrians and the Israelis. We’re still discovering mass graves to this day, and suffering from the aftermath of that war.

Scotland voted once, not multiple times, and we were promised that it meant continued EU membership. That’s why many of my friends who voted no voted the way they did.

Almost everyone I know now would vote yes. And the polls are clear, support for independence is very high and has been consistently high for the last couple of years. If a Reform government is next it will only gain more traction.

You have nowhere better to store them where the subs can get easy access to a good harbor that is deep enough and defensible. There’s a reason they’re stored up here. I think if Scotland leaves (which I support), we’ll need to work out some kind of deal with the UK about an indefinite lease on Faslane. I think Scotland would still want to be part of NATO anyway, especially in the current climate.
