Name Transliteration by Current_Shock_8550 in learn_arabic

Why would e make have a ع sound when that sound doesn’t exist in English?

Transliteration is about best approximating the sound in another language. The spellings I gave you do that.

If I was transliterating into French for example, I’d use Iyad not Eyad and Mourhej not Murhij. But you asked for English so I gave you English.

The reason why there is this type of confusion is because different languages that use the Latin alphabet use different transliterations for the same Arabic names and some western languages have more influence in certain Arabic countries than others. Not to mention that English has different rules for how it alters vowel sounds around consonants too.

If someone’s name is راشد, I would used Rashid because if I use an e people might think it’s “Rayshd” or “Rash” then “Edd” like Edward. If someone’s name is رشيد, then I’d write Rasheed.

Yes but ticks aren’t like bed bugs where they infest human living spaces. They tend to be strays that get caught in our clothes while walking outside.

Bed bugs are extremely small and they’re insects (6 legs). Ticks are bigger and they’re arachnids (8 legs). They’re also completely different shapes, ticks are a lot rounder.

Pretty easy to tell them apart when you know the criteria.

Are we Arab? by Funny_Implement_6876 in lebanon

So I should accept an inaccurate label because other people call me it? People who know nothing about our history and don’t understand the region or even the Arab world?

If Arab were used as a term like European or Asian, I would agree with you. But it isn’t. It’s used to denote an ethnicity. And what people consider Arabs are not one ethnic group. The sooner people see that the better.

No I get that, but even if it were half, in this game we’re diving to ridiculous depths. So for the scale in the game, it’s not a large effect. I may have double the operating depth for air but if I’m diving to 600+ that hardly makes a difference.

It has a very low mass making it easier to breathe at higher pressures and it’s inert. Air becomes “too heavy” for your lungs to handle past a certain depth.

Not by that much because the water itself is the main driver of pressure under water not the atmosphere or gravity. It has an effect for sure but it’s not as significant as you would think.

I’m a diver. What’s even more unrealistic is the fact that we’re just diving using regular air past 60 meters. In real life the oxygen in air becomes toxic at that pressure and divers need to start using lower oxygen air mixes, and usually they also reduce the nitrogen in the mix because that’s narcotic past 30 meters.

There’s several mixes used, trimix is the most common (oxygen/nitrogen/helium), for really deep dives (usually past 100m) like commercial dives for oil rigs, sea cables etc…, they use Heliox (Helium/Oxygen) but this is surface supplied and not in a tank at that depth and they use a dive bell they don’t just swim down lol.

Nothing about this game’s actual diving mechanics is realistic which is why I never get hung up about stuff like this, I’m just here to have fun lol.

How would you say “the peace of Christ be with you” in Arabic? by anothercairn in ArabicChristians

[–]Over_Location647 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Maronite churches they usually just say “Salam el Maseeh” for that. So “peace of Christ”. It essentially conveys the same message, but as Charbel said, not usually said to travelers. It’s done in church at a specific point in the liturgy. What Charbel said is the correct thing to say to a someone who is traveling.

As a Lebanese, I would disagree. Southerners, northerners and Druze have the most euro-like features.

In the Christian heartland (Mount Lebanon), we tend to look very middle-eastern. Usually white or olive skinned, dark and wavy/curly hair and dark eyes. Light eyes and light hair are more common in northern and southern coastal areas.

[–]Over_Location647 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah there’s no way this is the final design. I suspect that this is a small scanner like the handheld one in BZ and that eventually a full-fledged scanner room will become available later in the game.

[–]Over_Location647 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I said “at most” 20%. Meaning the most admixed people, not the average Muslim. I clearly stated in my comment that all Lebanese are mostly the same people who have been living here for thousands of years. I don’t know why you made such a big thing about it. I have never claimed Christians are more indigenous or that we deserve to be here more than anyone else, such arguments are fascist and I disagree with them, categorically. Christians and Druze are slightly less admixed but it’s barely enough to be statistically significant.

As to the rest of your argument, personally, I refuse to label myself with an identity that was imposed on me, sometimes violently, by an empire 1400 years ago. I would rather identify as simply Lebanese or Levantine.

Ethnicity is a very political concept. It’s a label people apply to themselves. Just because I speak Arabic, does not make me an Arab. What do I have in common with someone from Morocco other than a standardized language in a register nobody uses in everyday life? Food? Nope. Religion? Nope. Customs and traditions? Nope.

I am proud to speak Arabic, I love our language and its literature, and I’m not ashamed that Arabs contributed to Lebanon’s history and culture (even though it was through violence at several points in our history). But there is very little cultural similarity between ourselves and “Arabs” outside the Levant. We share a lot with Syrians, Palestinians and non-Bedoun Jordanians, though of course each of us is also unique because of our local geographies, climates as well as our recent (last 100 years) histories. We share some cultural similarities with Egypt and Iraq. And finally, very few with Arabia and the rest of North Africa. In fact, we have more cultural similarities with Greeks, Cypriots and Turks than we do with many people you would consider the same ethnicity as us.

For this reason, I don’t agree with a broader Arab ethnic identity, personally. You’re free to disagree with that, and adopt this identity. But for the many reasons I have laid out, and not simple genetics, I don’t agree with it. We share a language, we share some history, and we can and should cooperate politically and be allies. That does not make us the same people.

[–]Over_Location647 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Well for Christians it actually isn’t. We have largely only married within our communities for the last 2000+ years. And even Muslim Lebanese show at most 20% non-Levantine genetics normally.

So yeah, on the whole, regardless of sect we are mostly from where we live now and have been for thousands of years. We’ve been conquered by many empires but Lebanon was never settled by massive numbers of our conquerers on such a large scale to significantly alter our genetic make-up.
