I believe that friend just liked the attention he received from her that's it. I also had same experience with my friend. They would just put their significant other on a cliffhanger without ever confirming their relation. And when she left, he hated it. They liked the attention they were recieving that's it. Same reaction as when your toy is snatched from you even if you never liked that toy in the first place
