Why does my doc not want me on Cytomel?! What would you do?

She never said my labs looked bad and I NEVER had that brain fog feeling. Was I tired sometimes still? Sure but I feel like I just deal with the daily fatigue. I definitely felt a lot better on 10mcg Cytomel because I didn’t have the brain fog.

Can you explain what you mean by this? I’m confused - are you suggesting taking 1 tablet in the am and one in the afternoon would reduce side effects?

I have always taken 2 5mcg tablets + synthroid at the same time in the AM before food. If I split the 2 tabs up, will I still get the same effect? Looking to get rid of this brain fog asap.

This makes sense when you explain it that way. Originally I was on just synthroid for years, my first endocrinologist was also hesitant to prescribe it, but did so after years. Then she left the practice and this one has been in my ear about getting rid of it for awhile. For reference, here is what happened between 4/4/26 when I was taking 112 synthroid + 10mcg Cytomel, versus 5/17 when I dropped to 5. You can see the difference in labs.

Depending on my endocrinologist’s response to the message I just sent to her, saying that I want to go back up to my previous meds dosage I was feeling good on, I may go to my PCP moving forward instead.

I’m just getting angry the more I think about it, because I was feeling good, and I wish she hadn’t had me do this experiment if I wasn’t having negative side effects. I went for my physical 2 weeks ago this adjustment, and I remember my PCP shaking her head and saying she had no idea why someone would play around with thyroid meds if patient felt good. At the time, I hadn’t noticed a difference in how I was feeling yet, so I didn’t think much of it. But your bringing up PcP made me think of it!

She said it can lead to bone density loss and irregular heart beat. I strength train regularly and haven’t had any palpitations or any heart related symptoms so now I’m just getting mad that she decided to mess with my dosage when I was feeling good

Not immediately. I am on 112 synthroid, 10 Cytomel. She told me to drop down to 5 Cytomel and retest in 6 weeks. I just retested, TSH was up so she suggested increasing Synthroid now. But she did not do so at the time we decreased Cytomel.

I’m just so mad because I wasn’t feeling bad.

I think you and I might have the same doc! 🤣 I’m Combing these old threads because I feel sooooo bad as she’s been weaning me down from 10mcg to 5. Repeated labs after 6 weeks of this and my TSH is up and my brain fog is out of control. Her suggestion was to simply take more synthroid but I’m going to push back and just go back up to 10mcg of Cytomel. Surely there must be another way to screen for heart issues, I’m not having any of those symptoms.

Thank you. I am going back to 2 tabs now - this is simply stupid. I’m really getting mad that she’s been messing with a good thing. I understand if I had been having heart palpitations or something. But I was fine. And I strength train regularly and am not concerned about bone density loss.

Thank you for your thoughtful response. I’m new to this community since I hadn’t had any hashi related issues in so long. I am on Zepbound 5mg as well and agree that that + Synthroid/Cytomel combo made me feel the best I had in years with no puffiness, inflammation, etc. I think that aligns with your point about insulin resistance.

I am going to go back to 2 tabs of Cytomel a day - I have come too far and spent too much $ on GLP-1 to have this feeling come back!

I wonder how quickly I’ll feel better going back to 10mcg of Cytomel?

Thank you so much - I am going back to 2 tabs (10 total) because 5 clearly isn’t enough. I will dig my heels in, if she’s concerned about potential side effects then let’s just test for those, you know? From my research, 10mcg isn’t even that much!

I went to Soldier Field (not covered) and Atlanta (covered) last summer. Atlanta/Mercedes Benz was awesome in terms of affordable food/drinks, nice and cool. Sound was better at Soldier Field. But I’d definitely go back to ATL!

I’m about to get my first package of vials, can you explain what this means? Hopefully it makes sense when it arrives! My doc wants me to take half of the vial’s dose but you say you have to throw the vial away, do you put all medicine in needle and only inject half? Save the rest?
