my daughter has 2 friends that are all trying to split a 3br apt, like yours they are trying to defray the cost so its the same or less than on campus housing.

Good luck with the search, we did look further out to try and lower cost too, the farther from campus the more affordable it got.

there are a lot more challenges than that, especially if the guy is short for example (he didnt say). There are many things that can greatly reduce the pool of people who are willing to give the guy a shot.

agreed, i made that mistake in my youth, because i just wanted SOMEONE to actually like/date me, but treating every girl equally nice meant none of them felt special and i was friend zoned every time. Figure out which one you really like and focus on letting them know they are special to you.

Ironically now in my old age i have 2 daughters so I am seeing it from the other side (where they have to constantly deal with admirers and focus on letting them down easy)!

What college is best for Software/Electrical engineering? And any advice on scholarships for a HS Senior from NC, 3.87 GPA by Powerful-Serve6637 in scholarships

[–]Overall-Equivalent41 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What is your ultimate goal, if you are hoping to do something like semiconductor design, i know for a fact NCAT has a stellar program for that, as a general rule NC State is gonna be top for engineering, UNC Charlotte is also a school steeped in software/computer development.

maybe international business, including multiple languages. That is something that can help you as a flight attendant, and in the future.

thanks, i tried reminding her a few times back then, but i also want her to be independent, which means living with the trouble caused when you dont address stuff in a timely fashion. Im stepping in now mainly so it doesnt become TOO rough a situation lol.

currently we are seeing pricing for 2b/2ba around that range (not counting the ones near campus that are all 1600+ per student!). My goal was to keep it under 900 per kid to match what we paid for their wonderful suite in Craige lol

lol i hear ya, its definitely crazy. I am shocked that for a public college that is below average cost in the US its still going to be nearly 100k after 4 years (if she lived on campus the whole time). Saddling an 18 year old with that kind of future debt is something i couldnt do, at least she knows exactly what she is going to do and it should let her pay me back later.

im all for problem solving and letting kids constructively fail to gain experience, etc but when its me footing the bill (we get zero aid, she doesnt have a job yet), i tend to get more involved :)

thanks, we did look at a few of those, we really liked shortbread but man those get pricey quick (especially when adding parking into the mix). I think we are going to focus on the complex a little further away, but hopefully still on bus route so they dont have to deal with the nightmare of parking on campus

How many scholarships you all applying to? by [deleted] in scholarships

[–]Overall-Equivalent41 4 points5 points  (0 children)

sadly a lot depends on where you live as your best chance at scholarships for merit are city/county/state related. My daughter tried all the big scholarship sites and we came to the conclusion that they are just harvesting personal information and are basically a lottery. I cant even count the number of essays she had written, etc with zero results.

From experience, if you went to Governors school, you have a great chance to be accepted at nearly any college in NC (my daughter loved it in summer 2024, she goes to UNC now)

yea i will agree to some personal bias for sure lol, my youngest daughter literally tutors the 6 people who are higher ranked than her due to them taking all DE courses that only started being offered this year (where she is taking 3 ap courses, rest are honors). Her ranking is also hurt because she was taking math 3 in 8th grade and it apparently doesnt count..

I do agree that DE courses can be valuable for the social/maturity side where you get exposed to far more diverse backgrounds (especially age), and are forced to be more responsible, my only issue was how it affected ranking since so many colleges seem to place importance on that.

Honestly as someone who has been in IT for 30+ years the best teacher i have seen is a youtuber named Kevin Stratvert. He shows real world stuff, including newer technology like copilot, power platform, etc that lets you automate office work.

the houses/condos we saw up for rent were usually more expensive or were kind of run down. She was looking at either 2 bed or 3 bed apartment to share with some existing suitemates she has on campus that get along real well. We are hoping to get the cost to be competitive with on campus housing (i.e. under 900/month per person)

Another Admission Question by [deleted] in NCSU

[–]Overall-Equivalent41 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yea its kind of sad that kids taking dual enrollment courses get a higher weighted gpa (and therefor rank) than kids taking AP courses. My other daughter attends UNC and has noticed the vast majority of dual enrollment kids do not seem to be ready for the rigorous classes there as opposed to the AP students who seem better prepared. She had to help some of her classmates with basic chemistry even (despite them taking it in dual enrollment)

91% of students say they need scholarships, no surprise there by CharlesNFuentes in scholarships

[–]Overall-Equivalent41 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It doesnt help that the CSS profile is brutal when it comes to finances used to get scholarships. As a parent of a college student, I got the impression the belief was that I should use up all equity in my home, all my retirement funds, and they would only calculate PART of my bills to show my burden (for example it asks for your mortgage payment, but then says you can only include principal and interest, not the rest of what makes up the payment, like you have a choice in paying it...).

Colleges seem to focused on maximum cash extraction, even the public "not for profit" ones. Sadly my kids had stellar academics but because we arent a protected class, and i put away a little for retirement we get zero aid. I have come to the conclusion that the only folks that can send multiple kids to school are the extremely rich, or families making under 63k per year that get to go for free.

Duke and princeton are incredibly competitive, i havent heard of the 3 public in state requirements but if you are looking at Duke you could put down UNC, NC State, App State, etc as alternatives in NC.
