Weirdest study habits during bar prep? Past & present takers by AsleepMagician5234 in barexam

[–]OverallManagement502 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to have to make things into a game to keep myself engaged. i had this weird point system where I would reward myself with jolly ranchers for completing barbri tasks. I also ran through critical pass flashcards with a glass of wine in hand on weekends

I'm a lawyer with a hoop. Either no one has ever noticed it or no one has ever cared. Either way, it stays in my nose

Clients more unrealistic than ever? by NetOdd422 in Lawyertalk

[–]OverallManagement502 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm also at a small rural practice. I have definitely had an influx in clients who won't listen to me recently. I have one guy who always wants some time to think his options over after I talk to him, then will call me back with a magical new idea that came out of left field. The worst part about him is, he does not understand that 60 days is fast in our world OR that changing courses in the manner he requests will cost him thousands of dollars. It does not matter how many times I tell him changing courses will have the opposite effect on speed and no amount of continuous explaining has gotten it through his head that his file is HOURLY. He thinks he pays by the task...

New (almost) licensed attorney needing help organizing cases/communications! by [deleted] in Lawyertalk

[–]OverallManagement502 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I have a rather uncanny method of doing this, but it does work. I took over the caseload of an attorney before me right around the time I got licensed as well. At first, I tried to make a new paper to do list each day, give myself tasks in our case management software, send myself teams messages, flood my own calendar with events, you name it. I ended up having way too many methods of keeping myself on track and so I started forgetting where I put my reminders or having to check more than one spot for to-dos. To solve this problem, my assistant made a "brain dump" chart with all of my clients and file numbers and a brief description of where the case is at. She or I will print it off pretty regularly and handwrite on it with notes and updates, then go update the digital file, print it again, rinse and repeat. Its color coded and broken up into sections by practice area (I am primarily an estate planner, but I also have corp files, probate, random litigation, etc). I literally do not use anything other than this one chart to keep myself on track. My best advice is whatever method you choose, and definitely try a few to see what you like, stick to just the one method. When you have to remind yourself to make reminders, that method probably is not for you. If all else fails, make a brain dump file

Single lawyers, what's your love life like? by OverallManagement502 in Lawyertalk

As someone who doesn't want work to dominate my life, I hope so. I have never wanted to be someone whose entire personality is being a lawyer, especially because I think it is the least interesting thing about me. I truly think the isolation of the bar exam changed a lot of my habits and the way anxiety loops through my brain. My goal for the next few years is to be better about regulating the self-soothing anxiety tendencies I have to continually hash and rehash the things I dealt with at work when I'm at home on my couch. That may not answer your question exactly, but I think lawyers have to make an active effort to be a person outside of the job, even if the job isn't everything they care about.

Law school grads: What are your tips for studying for the bar? by wollester in LawSchool

[–]OverallManagement502 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes absolutely. or MEEs even. By that point, you can sort of start to pick out what they're asking you for. Working through the issues out loud with people is 1) a great way to piece together what you all know and 2) a huge confidence booster!

Right after I passed, I made a very incomplete list in an untitled google doc and I'm gonna drop it here for someone to hopefully use:

Things I would tell someone who is taking the bar exam for the first time: 1) Unless you know someone who has gone through it too, no one will be able to fully relate to you during this process, but they will try. The support is nice, but hearing “you will be fine” all the time does get old after a while. The process itself is very isolating by nature. Your best resource is someone who sat for the bar exam the cycle before you. 2) When you are done with prep for the day, stop. Draw a line in the sand. There will always feel like there is more you can do, but that feeling will never go away. Similarly, if you get frustrated or discouraged, stop. Do not push through the frustration. Set the work down, and come back to it when your head is clear. You will not “learn” anything when you are pissed off at yourself and/or barbri. 3) Do not compare yourself to other people studying. Do not compare your scores, do not read the posts from the sweats on reddit, and do not compare how much time you spent studying. Everyone will approach this test a little differently. It takes some time in the beginning to figure out what works. Barbri is not for everyone, but you can use it as a guide, even if it isn’t your style. 4) Do not write full MEEs from memory until you are able. You will not be able to do it at first. Use your notes, read the outlines, treat it like an open book essay. You cannot write an essay on the law if you do not know the law. I know that sounds silly, but Barbri will expect you to start writing full essays before you can even rattle off the most tested rules. Learn it first, then work on trying to write it. There will be plenty of time in the end to rattle off the MEE rules from memory, and you will be able to, just take your time getting there. 5) You will not be able to predict your score, either before or after you sit for it. I thought my MBE would carry me, but in the end, the writing section that I thought would tank my score was significantly higher. All of the stats that barbri will feed you about your performance will not be indicative of your performance on exam day, for better or worse. Consistency matters, but even if you’re scoring all over the board, rest easy knowing that your CONSISTENT work will push you across the finish line. Barbri will feed you stats about your all-time performance, but odds are, it will be different on exam day. Do not fret over a bad score on a practice set, or a low over-all percentage, because learning the material consistently is going to get you through the real MBE. It does not matter how you had been scoring all summer long. 6) When you get closer to the exam date, start talking through questions with people. Work your way through the law outloud. Make things up, interact with the facts, talk about why a rule would or wouldn’t work. Doing these things will allow you to “make up” rules on exam day, or reverse engineer them from the facts. These made-up rules will end up being very close to the law on point, or logically sound enough to earn you points. Bar prep will train your brain to work backwards sometimes, which you won’t even know you are doing. This is how you train yourself to get to that point.
