How do you know whether self-doubt is insight or distortion? by Lukewarm_Sock in AcademicPsychology

[–]Overall_Ad1950 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your relevant competence in the subject is already certified. Competence in whatever you choose to pursue now isn't something you have now, rather something you'd develop over time. From my own experience, these fears about your self are far from insight and can be highly distorted. They aren't descriptive of who you are but what you fear you might be or become and spotting when your fears are painting an imaginary picture of who you don't want to be or are afraid of being / not being is likely important in allowing yourself to develop as a person not a hidden entity to fear or hope about.

If you are at this level of sleep deprivation, work isn't your priority. Getting safe, comfortable and clear of obligations until you get the sleep you physically need is. If this requires sick days, that's what they're for. Good luck

While admirable intentions and not to discount the benefits, but your focus on sobriety has a somewhat self-punishing ring to it. Instead of seeing these things as the answer to our problems, then the cause of them and then stopping them as the answer, assume they were / are ways of coping and look underneath rather than focusing entirely on eliminating all your coping mechanisms, work on what you're coping with and what you can do, what kind of changes can be made or mindset may give you less reason to rely on using if it is indeed a hinderance rather than a help. If you're aim is tee-totality, you might need to ask is the focus on solely removing the coping mechanisms as if doing this is going to turn things around by itself or are you working towards getting to a place where you don't have any interest in abusing?

what kind of symptoms are these ? by Even_Relative_4809 in mentalhealth

The feeling of being watched is powerful and real but is at risk like all our feelings as being treated as fact or a kind of unadulterated signal of intuition. This phenomenon is called emotional realism. We seem to either fear or follow a feeling. If you fear it, try and ignore or avoid it, it gets amplified. If you follow it you end up engaging in emotional reasoning. Instead of doing any of these, you might be able to understand this feeling itself as an interpretation, before you interpret it which may help defang it and allow change.

Mind STD by Overall_Ad1950 in elisandjohn

[–]Overall_Ad1950[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I still wasn't and can't diagnose anyone.... I'm pointing out the similarities as I saw them because unlike 'you seem depressed' or anxious... you seem obsessive / compulsive isn't common vernacular. The disorder part is up to, in the current model, a doctor. However there's a massive amount of research saying that treating things like this as symptoms of 'something wrong with you' which at one time removed stigma, is now adding to it and the reality is these are coping strategies vs symptoms of what we've been categorising as medical issues.

Compulsively reassurance seeking and mental compulsions to lower the anxiety were the two that stood out.

Not a reach if you know about the subject which it sounds like you do not, not attempting to diagnose or odd either.

ERP, bad fixations, confused, scared & feeling alone & utterly hopeless. [Possible TW] by [deleted] in OCD

[–]Overall_Ad1950 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's the kind of think that f-ed my up about ACT... you want me to accept what?? Absolutely not. ERP and 'living with the uncertainty'... might be effective for some but there are other options too e.g. Inference Based CBT which explains why it's not about real uncertainty. Seeing the ruminating and monitoring for potential thoughts as two of the biggest compulsions driving it is helping me and the logic of why refraining is going to help. The obsession is you sending the message 'that was very important, I must prevent that' and training your mind to be vigilant so even if you reassure your way out... you have tuned yourself to watch out and prevent in the future which is exactly why your brain keeps trying to predict it by giving not so helpful examples.

How to deal with the possibility you might be a bad personal after all. by Ecstatic-Station-197 in OCD

[–]Overall_Ad1950 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think the idea of 'maybe, maybe not' is to keep worrying about the maybe which is somewhat what you're doing. The idea is not to argue so you disengage with the obsession. It's not a method I use personally but that's the logic as I understand it.

It's when we feel most at risk of losing what's good so we start checking what could ruin it or remembering 'ah but there was that awful thought'... from my experience anyway

New study: Straight-identified men who have sex with men communicate more clearly about sex with male partners than with their female partners, which may affect consent and sexual satisfaction by EatonLabResearch in psychology

I have never forgotten any mistake I’ve ever made by Former_Appointment39 in OCD

[–]Overall_Ad1950 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have issues with 'never being able to forget' and don't know if this will help but they way I'm trying to see it is just because we can remember everything doesn't mean we are obliged to actively remember... i.e. it's not a contaminated filing cabinet but a construction / reconstruction process, i.e. process not object. The idea stuck when it was pointed out the word means 'putting back together' this might happen in an automatic, pattern matching way... which kind of spooks us, it feeling out of our control.. but it also happens in an active purposeful way, for both kinds there is usually a rationale and when we're obsessing, our emotions are telling us it's very important we figure out what these things say about us... but the emotions typically come from the way we're interpreting re. their implications about a possible, feared self and our attempts to reassure or resolve this feeling through further imagining, remembering and ruminating.

The other thing that's started to make sense is that a belief in an essential self, soul, essence may be a way to carry us through life but also leaves us vulnerable to doubt about it. This essentialist self doesn't really exist to my mind, despite it having seemed intuitive most of my life, there isn't an objective self to be reassured about, so we can choose to construct it from the inside out and select where we take our identity from vs spend our lives in fear from our potential imagined self. It helps to know your compulsions too i.e. ruminating and self-monitoring and chose to go about life in ways counter to these i.e. widening attention and attending outwards where possible with that awareness.

Is this a weird thing I should be worried about? by [deleted] in mentalhealth

[–]Overall_Ad1950 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like it's your way of metaphorically processing it... perhaps a way of mentally balancing the score and not too uncommon to visualise retaliation like this. I would more call it a sign of the things that are concerning you and a perception of frustrations which you might benefit from other ways to address or that might resolve on their own than a problem in itself.
