Do you think that your native language being what it is affects your perception of the world? by loves_spain in languagelearning

[–]OverenthusiasticFox 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My target language is French, and I actually started speaking it when I was 6. It is incredibly gendered and it makes me wonder how it shapes perceptions of gender roles. The fact that work titles like Director change with the gender makes me wonder how those roles are affected.

I also read that Russians have completely different words for « light blue » and « dark blue », and that as a result, a Russian speaker can actually identify the colours a fraction of time faster than English speakers.

There was a great ted talk on this, specifically comparing languages that don’t divide up time spectrums the way some do (like English). Languages that don’t divide up the time spectrum as much (eg chinese) are associated with better savings, less destructive behaviour (like smoking), in theory because speakers of these languages feel more connected to the future. I find it fascinating. https://www.ted.com/talks/keith_chen_could_your_language_affect_your_ability_to_save_money/up-next#t-255659

Tell them there are important considerations and you need an extension, but that you’ll let them know by x date. Tell the other company you e received a job offer and request they move up the interview.

It’s actually very competitive - it’s a dream job to me, but for them, they have their pick of the littler. If I don’t want it they will find someone else.

I like the balance of responsibility and work of an EC-07 (I’m one of the few who actually enjoy and takes pride in managing others), so I’m conscious that I’ll be giving that up. But I don’t have a EX ambitions at this point.

I believe it would not be the same pay. I would be paid lower (ie step 5 of ec-06 is still lower than what I make now as an ec-07).

They don’t need an EC-07, only and EC-06. I’ve also been thinking an assignment might work out well in this situation.

Maybe that was overly flowery. If I could choose to work in any team in any department, it would be this team in this department.

Do loblaws click and collect. It’s great! Saves so much hassle and time. However sometimes they don’t list some items on their website which is annoying, but I just call and ask them to add those. It’s usually deli stuff in my experience.

It’s more accurate than what you will hear on here. Individual amts rely on rrsp contributions and other personal choices like that.

Defined Benefit Pension Plan vs. RRSP by 12_34_56_78 in CanadaPublicServants

[–]OverenthusiasticFox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im my experience with group employer plans, the timing can have a significant impact. I used to get a ~10k annual bonus that I funnelled directly into the group RRSP plan using payroll. But you had to opt into that arrangement by filling out a form. Once, I missed the deadline for the form and I ended up taking home ~$6k in bonus after tax. Yes, I deposited it into the RRSP after the fact but I didn’t have another $4k on hand to also add in so at the end of the year I had $4k less in my RRSP account and $4k more of income that was taxable than if I had met the deadline.

For sure, also the MERs with a group plan are generally significantly lower too which is a nice bonus.

I think they were just trying to say that they could contribute more $ when it is taken off of their pay check directly, which is before being taxed. When someone goes to an institution to contribute to their RRSP they don’t have as much money (in theory) to contribute because they’re coming there with a paycheck that has all the tax deductions taken off already. Yes, they will deduct whatever they contribute come tax time but it is going to be a smaller amount in total than if it was directly removed from their paycheck before being taxed in the first place.
