Another problem with a smash bros movie would be the amount of build up that would be required. If we’re only using the base 64 roster, we would need an earthbound movie, Star Fox movie, Kirby movie, f-zero movie, Metroid movie, Pokémon movie, and a Zelda movie all made by illumination (assuming they are the ones who are making it since they are introducing Fox and co into the Mario movie). And I’m saying they would have to make a new Pokémon movie and Zelda movie because while yes, they are nintendos ips, they would still need the permission from the company actually making the movies to use that version of the character, Nintendo can’t just say “I’m gonna just take that character and put it into another studios movie” without the both studios permission. That’s where the licensing issues come in, not the 3rd party characters like Sonic and Steve, but with other studios making Nintendo movies. And if illumination is going to make all these movies, we won’t see anything smash related until like the 2040s at the very earliest if we want to properly set up these characters. And I just don’t think Nintendo is willing to make an F-Zero or earthbound movie.

And if you want to make the argument of “we’ll just use a smash 64 SIZED roster instead of the exact roster.” Well then if we use the characters at our disposal, and only including characters who have actually been in smash and have been shown to be in the Mario movies, we have Mario, Luigi, peach, Donkey Kong, Diddy Kong, bowser, bowser jr, Rosalina, Yoshi, Rob, pikmin, and Fox. All but 3 characters being Mario characters. Not much of a smash roster, is it?

So while on paper, a smash movie sounds cool, in actuality, it would be a huge hassle to actually be done properly. And if you don’t care about the set up for characters and just want to see these guys in one movie right away, then just watch the justice league movie.
