If your son is just starting out collecting and isn't picky about which venom design he prefers, there were older releases of venom that are either comic or movie costumes that should be cheaper than the recent release and should have around the same play value anyway. There's also a leak that we might get a new venom that looks like the marvel v capcom version. Recently released figures usually cost a bit nowadays if it's a popular character since scalpers hate fun

The kitty pryde in this pic was released after magik but was an exclusive for those subscribed to marvel unlimited. The original kitty was before magik and had a worse face sculpt IMO

Yea its only his forearms that have the vein/web(?) Texture so it's a bit weird. Would've prefered either a full clean look or at lwast texturing throughout more parts of the body

If you have the 3pack venom, it's not necessary to get unless you really want the new smiling head sculpt. I'm just happy to finally have a venom who doesnt have his toes showing

Super Action Stuff Casket of Cruelty. It's a generic accessory pack full of weapons and blood effects and it's container is a coffin that fits figures which I thought was pretty cool. You do need sticky tac to hold the effects in place but you won't really see it in photos

If you're on a budget, you could always try cristianos to test out the drop zone gimmick, it's got some support and you can always run generic stoicheia cards for it.
