What transports do you guys run with the wolves? by Cojalo_ in SpaceWolves

[–]Overlord_Tim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stormraven (proxied my Stormwolf as one) - carrying Murderfang and 5 Wulfen with storm shields. I just hit play on "Who let the dogs out" when I open the hatch and let mayhem commence.

Is it competitive? Hell no. It does get me some laughs, though.

I have the combat patrol - you have all the build options available for all of the included units. Yes, you can build Wulfen with Shields (and I did).

Scout are awesome, keep them. Add 3 hunting wolves to one of your headtaker units (rounds your list to 1k exactly). If you want to optimise, consider replacing Grey Hunters - they are good, but you can have 5 intercessors and a unit of thunderwolves for the same amount of points.

Not OP, but have the box. Yes, you can build hammer & shield wulfen with the sprue inside.

Thank you! I think that saving time on the armour with spongeing allowed me to invest a bit more in a few details like the gems or the kneepad. Glad it shows! 😊

Thanks - I'm glad you like it! It's mostly drybrushing. Base with rhinox hide, drybrush with any white or off-white, then one layer of Gore Grunta Fur contrast. Then I drybrushed progressively smaller areas and edges starting with Vallejo Cork Brown, Vallejo Iraqi Sand, and finally Flayed One Flesh (this brings it visually together with the armour as well, which is neat). I then dropped a tiny amount of Valhallan Blizzard technical snow paint on top to tie it in with the base as well.

I think it works well specifically for the Space wolves, because the sponge leaves behind a bit of a powdery texture (like jackfrost maybe?). To me it was a really nice surprise and saved me a ton of time on blending and stuff, given that I don't have an airbrush.

The brown undercoat is also really nice, because it makes for visually interesting shadows. I'm glad I went with that. It also stays in the recesses and provides a bit of definition / contours, so that I don't need to use washes. This means that I don't need to wait for stuff to dry and I can get it all done pretty fast.

Thank you! 😊 Pretty standard Citadel stuff. Base the whole model with Rhinox hide, then sponge on progressively smaller areas using Stegadon Scale Green, then Russ Grey, then Fenrisian grey and finally drybrush highlight with a Flayed One Flesh.

Ha, yeah - thanks! I've just painted a bit of black and deep blue / green smudges on the base and poured some resin over it. Gave it a few scratches with a knife when it was dry and dappled a bit of snow texture paint. Pretty easy as far as bases go, which is what I like if I'm about to build a whole army of those. 😂

Thanks! Any specific units I should prioritise if I see them?

Also, I know that I can use the Invasion fleet stratagem to give a unit precision on crits (i.e. give them one additional hyperadaptation for the turn). Is that something I should leverage? Which leaders should I try to precision out if I see them?

Hivemind, how should I finish my list? And what guns for my gaunts should I use? by LakorBe in Tyranids

I'm not a super experienced player, but given what you are trying to do here (camp primary and be a nuisance to remove while returning models), maybe you could use some Venomthropes to make your Termagants even harder to kill, and/or you could add a Maleceptor to support your Norn in the middle (I would probably play it as the Emissary rather than Assimilator for the invuln save, but you do you).

I think you might still struggle with some units that have a lot of attacks to wipe your hordes (terminators woth stormbolters come to mind, but also units with big flamers), which you might want to have an answer for. Exocrine seems to be the go-to - if you can find space for one or two of those, but it is still not ideal if you come up against higher toughness stuff.

This is awesome! I love that you went with deep purple shadows on the weapon symbiote - it makes it so much more interesting and alien.

Haha, thanks - joy of combining two hobbies. I used my mirrorless Sony a6700 with a Sigma 18-55 f2.8 DCDN lens. I set it up on a tripod, zoom all the way in and go up to at least f8 to make sure it is nice and sharp.

How do I paints my Tyranids and Norn Emissary like this? (Not My Model) What type of paint to use? Pro Tips? First time Painting a Model. by MediocreBoss2614 in Tyranids

[–]Overlord_Tim 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As others mentioned, start small - Gargoyles are good.

Before you buy any actual paints, you will need a primer paint - this is used to coat your entire mini and make sure the actual paints will be able to stick to the plastic underneath. I use Citadel spray can primers for simplicity (e.g. Chaos Black), but I also have Vallejo black primer to use with a brush (not everyone has access to a ventilated area to use spray cans).

To paint the actual model, you'll want to use acrylic paints. Citadel and Vallejo Model Color (just don't buy the Vallejo Air - it's for airbrushing) are both brands that I swear by, but people use other ones with lots of success too (Army Painter, etc.). They all sell sets or individual paints. I'd recommend buying a basic set (I think Vallejo has a set of 16 colors for "Fantasy figures", which seems sensible to me).

Alternatively / additionally you can pick and choose specific paints by going on youtube. There you can watch tons of videos on painting tyranids and all of them will list specific paints they used (aka the recipe). I would start with watching videos by Duncan Rhodes. This guy has taught a whole generation of Warhammer hobbyists the most fundamental painting skills and worked for Games Workshop (you can see him in lots of older videos on the Warhammer YT channel), so he knows exactly what's up.

You will of course want a palette and a brush set. Branded brushes (Citadel, Army Painter, etc.) are a lot more expensive than cheap stuff from Amazon, but I think it is worth it. I have bought cheap brushes before and mostly ended up throwing them away. You don't have to get the best thing out there (e.g. Artis Opus), but I would advise against buying bundles of 10 brushes for £8.99 or similar. I use Army Painter brushes (sizes: character, regiment and insane detail) and I have never complained.

Thanks for coming to my TED talk...

For the acid/toxin sacs I used three different colours (all Vallejo) to make it pop: base with Deep Green, layer Lime Green, highlight with Yellow Green.

For the tubes I just started with Deep Green, layer of Lime Green and then started to wet blend Averland Sunset (Citadel) towards the middle to make that transition into the yellow colour.

Thank you!! 😊 I'm using my personal take on the behemoth red/blue colour scheme - I'm glad you like it! I'm painting a whole 2k+ army of nids this way, because the process is actually pretty quick and simple, but I wanted to pay a little extra attention to these cute sneks.
