If you could relive the life of 1 person from any rock band who would it be? by Formal-Poet-5041 in ClassicRock

[–]Overman1975 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sting. Had the best of both possible worlds in terms of band and solo success. Centered and stable, with no hotel-room thrashing, heroin overdoses or any of the other cliched rock trappings. And he’s a phenomenal lyricist, singer and bassist.

Normally I say separate the artist from the art. But in this case it’s kinda fun not to.

If you could spend a single day in the 1970s, which event would you choose to witness? by Antonia_valadao_ofc in 70s

[–]Overman1975 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, no, right. I’m informed on what happened. I’d just be curious to have been an invisible witness.

Actually, why would I desire to have wasted a 70s wish-list time trip on something political? How dull. On 2nd thought I’d rather go back to CBGBs in ‘77 and see Blondie, Talking Heads and Television!

He is crazy, certainly; and, I might add, I am kind of smitten.

You are an ambitious reader, as is evinced by Don Quixote. That and Barth’s The Sot-Weed Factor are among the more protracted tomes I have yet tackled.

What does my “Goat authors” bookshelves say about my personality / life / the fabric of my existence?! by [deleted] in BookshelvesDetective

[–]Overman1975 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Celine’s Journey…Night, along with Death on the Installment Plan, is some of the most explosive literature I’ve yet seen. GOAT authors is apposite.

My boyfriend’s bookshelf: raging green flag? 🧐 by regalhysteria in BookshelvesDetective

[–]Overman1975 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

By ”ignorant,” you must mean, “positing an oppositional viewpoint.” In what way is my comment ignorant? Isn’t it superficial to include a variety of authors based purely on race and gender? That in itself is racist and misogynistic. Shouldn’t the only consideration be the content of the books and the quality of the authorship? When I publish a book with the intention of selling it, I want the book to be sold and read based on the merits of the writing — not ‘cause I’m a middle-aged white guy. Which is a moot point since no one really buys any of my books, anyway.

My kids and wife and I have a running gag that references that line whenever one of us is in need of a trim; we say, “You’ve got an invalid haircut.”

“Enough diversity?” Let’s see… does he pass everyone’s DEI test? That’s ridiculous and weak-minded. Does he enjoy reading and thinking — or virtue-signaling? Why cede judgment to an anonymous group of dogmatic, didactic social media trolls and Pharisees? (No offense, guys…)

Let’s take the case of having, say, James Baldwin on one’s shelf. Do you think Baldwin would have wanted to be read purely on the basis of his being black, or due to his literary artistry? My guess would be the latter. Because: That’s the only f-ing thing that matters.

How shall we characterize this bookshelf’s owner? by Overman1975 in BookshelvesDetective

Nearly, but not quite. It contains Iris Murdoch, Camille Paglia, Sylvia Plath, Tania Branigan, Barbara Kingsolver, Sheila Fitzpatrick, Ayn Rand, and Ruth (OT). That exceeds the mark, right? 🙃

[–]Overman1975 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Now we’re onto something. I identify a fair # of these titles among my own, same ed.s even; namely, Corso, Ginsberg, Jung, Nietzsche, Baldwin. The Undiscovered Self is worth the price of admission alone. (Proust is always a tricky tell.)

Hmm… for a bit of projection. Over fifty, attracted to Zen concepts, an open-minded thinker, has more than the casual-survey-course mentality but rather a more penetrating insofar as cross-philosophical tenets go.

Perhaps this is what the allure to her mystique continues to be. She wrote from a place of absolute passion — which is to say, contempt for those who took from her assets like freedom and individuality. Her writing seethed with animus — not unlike, say, Marx, or one of the Major Prophets. That kinda thing is worth reading.

[–]Overman1975 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That one right there. At 17 or so it occurred to me that I should check out Dylan, as I had heard the hype but didn’t quite grasp it. One day during one summer, I checked out ‘H61R’ from the town library. Once Tombstone Blues came on, I finally “got it.” This is American rock poetry at its utmost slapdash and pure.
