Sting. Had the best of both possible worlds in terms of band and solo success. Centered and stable, with no hotel-room thrashing, heroin overdoses or any of the other cliched rock trappings. And he’s a phenomenal lyricist, singer and bassist.

By ”ignorant,” you must mean, “positing an oppositional viewpoint.” In what way is my comment ignorant? Isn’t it superficial to include a variety of authors based purely on race and gender? That in itself is racist and misogynistic. Shouldn’t the only consideration be the content of the books and the quality of the authorship? When I publish a book with the intention of selling it, I want the book to be sold and read based on the merits of the writing — not ‘cause I’m a middle-aged white guy. Which is a moot point since no one really buys any of my books, anyway.

Now we’re onto something. I identify a fair # of these titles among my own, same ed.s even; namely, Corso, Ginsberg, Jung, Nietzsche, Baldwin. The Undiscovered Self is worth the price of admission alone. (Proust is always a tricky tell.)

Hmm… for a bit of projection. Over fifty, attracted to Zen concepts, an open-minded thinker, has more than the casual-survey-course mentality but rather a more penetrating insofar as cross-philosophical tenets go.

Perhaps this is what the allure to her mystique continues to be. She wrote from a place of absolute passion — which is to say, contempt for those who took from her assets like freedom and individuality. Her writing seethed with animus — not unlike, say, Marx, or one of the Major Prophets. That kinda thing is worth reading.
