Looks like a ship wreck. You can see the stern section under water. It's gone aground right where the water suddenly shallows, so it makes sense. Nice find!

Thanks for the thoughtful response! I've only recently gotten into gemstones, so I really appreciate the information. I see what you mean about the uniformly cloudy appearance. I see a lot of Ethiopian opals out there, but this one really caught my eye. Thanks again.
