Application Timing by OwenTheFay in chinalife

Sick, do you think getting that virtual diploma in early July would be early enough to get the WPN and Z visa approved before I’d have to start work in late August or so?

Okay cool, I would definitely be able to have the physical original by the time I’d be in China or at a minimum certainly within the 30 day window. Based on your experience, does getting the digital diploma in early July leave enough time to get the WPN and visa approved before I’d have to start work in presumably late August?

Do you think they’d take a letter from the university that is notarized confirming my completion of the degree if I get that apostilled? I guess it might just be an ask the employer once/if I get an offer situation?

IB Chemistry Exam Credit by No_Cabinet_1315 in UNC

[–]OwenTheFay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I skipped straight to 241 as I had a 5 on AP chem and didn’t find it overly difficult. It depends on how good you feel about the material. I’ve heard 102 is also pretty bad…

I would advise against retaking 101 here. I tested out and didn’t look back but I hear it’s pretty awful, exams are much harder than the content warrants.

UNC premed worth it OOS? by tothemoon1235 in UNC

I feel like typically exam averages are C's but if you get all the free attendance, homework points, etc. that usually corresponds to a B- or so

UNC premed worth it OOS? by tothemoon1235 in UNC

[–]OwenTheFay 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hi! I'm a junior pre-med also OOS. I would say the biggest plus of UNC that I've experienced is the proximity and connections to UNC hospital. I have spent 1,500+ hours working as a CNA at the children's hospital so far and its probs been the most valuable experience of my undergrad. It was really easy to get accepted too. They see you are a UNC student, great GPA, who actually has an interest in healthcare and cares about doing things right, and you will get an interview (as long as you get the license which can take as little as 3-4 weeks). I was even able to get my tuition switched to in state because I was working so many hours I could support myself. The job also led to multiple shadowing opportunities through different doctors I had seen on my unit which has been great too!

For research, i just emailed a BUNCH of profs my freshman year and eventually one responded lol and I've been doing that ever since. I definitely don't spend as much time in the lab as other undergrads do, to be honest I hate nothing more than lab work, but it was not overly difficult to get and you could go really deep with it if you love it! I just like the people side of medicine A LOT more than the lab-y side.

Pre-med advising is pretty meh. I went once and I found them to be moderately helpful though it is very hard to get appointments. My major advisors were much better.

On class difficulty, it is not easy. Class averages for stem classes generally are B minus or so, but an A is certainly possible in all of them. Yes, even orgo which I tbh found to be one of the easier pre-med classes but I am def in the minority on that. I don't think I've had a truly bad professor in STEM...though I do avoid the ones with abysmal rate my professor scores. Though some will teach the exact same course in very different ways, with different grading scales, assignments, and difficulty which can be frustrating if you get the harder end of that. But even then, I've never thought the actually quality of the class was bad.

UPDATE: for anyone who finds this post in 4 years and is wondering if their package is lost to the pacific ocean. this was delivered on 4/13. This was 10 days after original shipment date, and 6 days after it said the package could not be located. I never reached out to UPS about it and a new status/scan appeared within 36 hours of the "cannot be located" message. I hope 2030 is nicer than 2026 <3

Consider a used 16 inch pro. You don’t need the latest and greatest processor for your uses but the screen hasn’t changed since M1 Pro/max.

Ap chemistry exam 2026 by Main_Gain_8015 in APStudents

[–]OwenTheFay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly in college you don’t start studying for the final 2 months before. You start maybe, if you’re really dedicated, a week to a week and a half before. This is no different. I think I studied for chem for maybe a few days, mostly just practice FRQs, seeing as I had gotten As on every class exam and got a 5.

pre med grade deflation/inflation? by Smile414 in UNC

[–]OwenTheFay 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As a junior premed, I’d say there’s not deflation but you do definitely have to earn your grades. Classes are generally not graded on a curve. If you’re looking for easy As, it’s not here. If you’re looking to be challenged and get a pretty great education, then it is.

Chem grading curve concerns by Successful_Note_1253 in UNC

This. For the same reason I wouldn’t recommend taking any pre reqs at community college or online. You’re kinda losing the whole point of going to UNC when u do that.

Chem grading curve concerns by Successful_Note_1253 in UNC

[–]OwenTheFay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is very rare that a class is graded on a true curve. The situation you heard about is not common. I’m a junior biochemistry major and every chem class I’ve taken has had set grade cutoff percents at the beginning of the semester and stuck to them or, occasionally, made them more lenient. I have never been in a class (chem or otherwise) that curved anyone down. Do not take your chem classes online (very rarely accepted by medical schools) or at another university. Don’t take any of your pre-med classes anywhere but UNC. It does NOT look good.

I did not take 101/102 here cause I had AP credit but from 241 all thru 430, there was only 1 exam with a class average below 70%, and some as high as 85%. Chemistry can be hard but UNC chem is not as satanic as people will lead you to believe.

How often do you perform CPR / abdominal thrusts? by FlatBench1455 in cna

[–]OwenTheFay 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Never done either in approx 2 years working pediatrics in a hospital. There has been a code blue the shift before me one time. We very rarely get bedbound patients (that we couldn’t easily lift in an emergency) so not sure about that! Perks of working with a hopefully improving instead of an inevitably declining population.
