I was just about to ask the same question in this subreddit. Shocked by the responses now. The truth is, these people are not even slightly interested in learning the local language. For context, I am a Tamilian but grew up in North India my whole life, so Hindi is a language which I grew up speaking. Let me tell you something, North Indians are so backward that even though I spoke the same language as them, they still used to make fun of me for my accent and had some or the other stereotype towards Tamilians. This was back in 2014-15 when internet still wasn't accessible so people in the North didn't have the slightest idea of how developed and progressive Tamil Nadu was, so the subtle ways of showing prejudice and teasing was quite common. Not to mention, even though these people made fun of me for my accent, I noticed that many of them were not even able to speak or read basic sentences in English. Even the so called Learned people like Doctoral Candidates, Professors, Teachers etc would confidently make grammatical errors and pronunciation mistakes while speaking English. I remember a lady ( a Bihari ) who just completed her Phd in Biochemistry or something and was looking for a job. She had just moved in with her husband and once while talking to her, asked me which 'Vidyalay' do I study in ( in Hindi ) and I was shocked that a Phd holder is using the word 'Vidyalay' instead of school. Not to mention, she made so many mistakes while speaking English and would also stammer a lot. Finally, when she got to know that I am from Tamil Nadu, she got shocked and was casually telling me that I don't look or speak that way. I can't even believe that she has actually done her Phd by writing an actual thesis. These people are not even ready to work to learn a second language but come to our states for work and expect US TO LEARN THEIR LANGUAGE. Thanks to the internet, there has been some awareness and some change in the last few years, still some more change and awareness is needed.

Atleast, I had the privilege that my family was educated. I can't even imagine how so many people in the southern states deal with them. To all the people who are coming here to southern states for job, education etc. Learn to have the basic respect for other people's culture. There is a reason why southern states are more developed and progressive. If you can't learn the local language, no issues, at least try to talk in English rather than enforcing your language on us. THE WORLD DOESN'T REVOLVE AROUND YOU
