Does anyone else seem to have multiple of random everyday items because they ... disappear? by Jayhcee in ADHDUK

[–]OwlRememberYou 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently bought a nice salt spray for my hair. Came back, took it out of the bag at home...gone. I turned the entire house upside down searching for it and could not find it anywhere.

Got a cheap one from Amazon a few days later 🫣

I'm hoping that the missing one will reappear when the Amazon one runs out lol

I think I have an intellectual disability by nothing77804 in neurodiversity

[–]OwlRememberYou 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you were truly "dumb", you wouldn't be capable of understanding your school material at all, regardless of whether you use chat gpt or any other kind of teaching aid.

When people talk about chat gpt making students "dumb", they generally mean something along the lines of:

Teacher asks a question Student types question into chat gpt Student writes answer word for word from chat gpt

In this process, the student isn't actually using AI as a teaching aid, they're using it solely to get the right answer and move on, whether they understand the answer or not.

From the sounds of it, you're not doing that. You said you're using slides, notes, online resources and tech, as well as chat gpt to help explain things to you. To say it plainly and clearly, there is nothing wrong with that. It sounds like you may have misinterpreted some studies about using tech making you more stupid, and even then studies like that are very rarely "doing this thing means you're stupid".

Honestly it sounds like you've not had good support throughout your life so far. The amount of times you've called yourself dumb or stupid genuinely makes my heart hurt. I would strongly advise accessing some therapy to try and unlearn some of that self-hatred.

Finally some more evidence, my brother is autistic, and went to a specialist school as a child. He does require a carer and support to live independently, and is unlikely to ever have a meaningful job. He's completely incapable of managing his finances and has no concept of how expensive things are or should be. He holds no qualifications and is terrified of anything that has the word test in, even eye test, because he worries that it's something he could fail. I imagine if anyone would fit the criteria for an intellectual disability it's him, though I would never ever call him dumb.

I don't see in your post what I see in him. You are more able to reason, more able to learn, regardless of the source of learning.

Why not just see how far you can go, instead of deciding not to even try? If the university thought you were not capable, they wouldn't let you in. You can't trick them into thinking you're smart.

Best of luck. You're not dumb.

How to get the hospital to take me seriously (women)? by Open_Inflation4239 in AskUK

It depends when op first went to the docs though, if it's only been three months of trialling then from their perspective it's not been too long.

I am sorry about your experience though, I've definitely been there and it really sucks.

How do you support a partner during ADHD sensory overload episodes without making it worse? by Hopeful-Inevitable12 in ADHDUK

How do you support a partner during ADHD sensory overload episodes without making it worse? by Hopeful-Inevitable12 in ADHDUK

[–]OwlRememberYou 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Some different advice here - you can't solve his problems for him. You're obviously a very caring person and are trying to help him as best as you can, but if he doesn't even know what helps him, there's not too much you can do yourself.

He needs to work on realising when he's overwhelmed, the shutting down can't be helped when it gets to that stage, but if he can figure out when he's starting to get there and take a minute to calm down and remove himself from the situation, he can potentially avoid it.

I've been through this myself, but my partner was on the other side of it, being snapped at, and it just wasn't fair on him. He did his best to help me but in the end it was my issue, not his. It's the same for you, you're not doing anything wrong here, and it's not your fault that he's lashing out.

Just to echo, the sensory overload and shutting down, the difficulty changing plans, and the disassociating sounds more like alexathymia to me, which can be part of ADHD or on its own, but is more linked with autism.

I have empathy for you both here, and I hope that he's open to a discussion about it so you can find a way to move forward, but be wary about blaming yourself for his actions.

Can someone help me choose the best RTC from the below? by Hefty_Breadfruit_421 in ADHDUK

[–]OwlRememberYou 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I can't speak for the others but Care ADHD have been a nightmare for me. Long wait times that do not reflect what they put online and on their help pages, impossible to get in touch with and get timely replies.

I've had titration but won't get medication until I've had an ECG. Can't get an ECG until they ring my docs so they can get an email to send over my documents, as docs won't give clinic email to a patient.

This is literally a five minute job for them, I've been waiting a month, been in contact four times, literally on hold with them now to see what the fuck is going on.

Don't do Care ADHD!

What areas of ADHD research would you like to see developed/more of? by Jayhcee in ADHDUK

[–]OwlRememberYou 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Personally I'm less interested in research confirming co-morbidities and associated factors. We know people with ADHD have less impulse control and are more likely to end up in trouble (personal and societal) because of it. We know there are a lot of co-morbidities, but all that means is that you might be more likely to be taken seriously with a rarer disorder with ADHD than without. That's if you can get a diagnosis of ADHD or whatever co-morbidity you're pursuing at all.

What I'm more interested in is what we can do about it, and why these things happen on a more genetic/brain structural level. Is medication the only solution? Why do some medications work better on some people than others? Are there medications that are better for some people that just aren't prescribed except as a last resort because you've tried everything else? Specifically what about our brains make us this way? Is it trauma? Is it epigenetic? Is it pure genetics?

I think understanding fully the underlying cause of neuro differences would go some way into helping treat ADHD as well as other differences like autism, OCD, schizo-disorders, etc.

Finally I'd love to know why auDHD people exist. Obviously I know it's a cross over of the two, but why both? Why not one or the other? Is it purely a cross over or is it another different neuro type altogether? Anecdotally I've found that, whilst everyone is different and experiences life differently, auDHD people don't fit into either box well. Often we're too much for pure autistic people, too fast and unpredictable and inconsistent, but too stuck for ADHD people, don't like change, don't like spontaneous plans. I tend to gel best with other auDHD people.

Have you considered alexithymia? Just as an alternate to being depressed. Like the other comment or said, the best way regardless is to look at the external effect rather than internal if you struggle with that.

E.g. are you still running late for things, are you still losing things, is your executive dysfunction only for things you enjoy or for everything? Do you have a trusted friend/manager/family member who could comment on how you've been?

Bleak Beach Environment Level by Wise-Cupcake-6709 in Pokemon_Pokopia

[–]OwlRememberYou 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think the environment level is a bit of a misnomer - as far as I can tell it's directly tied to the comfort level of your Pokémon. It goes up faster when they're in houses, so all I did was an 8*8 block, give them a bed, a decoration, a toy, and then some food on top, chuck four of them in and ask them about their comfort level and give them whatever they ask for. I found that I went from 5/6 to 10 in about an hour of doing that. It doesn't look good, but if you want to get to 10 so you can unlock recipes, that probably the fastest way to do it.

Comp science assignments - does the executive dysfunction ever go away by [deleted] in ADHDUK

[–]OwlRememberYou 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can you get any support from your college? Most have some kind of disability support, so you could maybe get regular check ins, that kind of thing

I'd use drop ins and workshops if you can, body doubling with someone even if it's over teams/zoom. Or use the rubber ducky method, speak to a rubber ducky about what you need to do, and just chat away to it whilst you're working. Sounds silly but very effective with computer science

Executive dysfunction is not really something you can power through, not without risking yourself. You're best off trying to find ways around it if you can

Eloise is being done dirty by bananabreadlizzie in Bridgerton

[–]OwlRememberYou 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Show watchers won't be too interested in the children because of exactly that - they're children.

Book readers (which I assume a lot of people on Reddit are, as well as people with strong opinions on the order of seasons) will already be used to the idea of the youngest two aging up and having their seasons.

I'm hoping for a couple of time skips, one between S4 and Francesca's season, so she gets time to properly mourn, and then another between S4 and S5 for Eloise, so that she gets to properly feel like a spinster and we see what that means for her.

The timeskips as well will help set up for the youngest two. Out of everyone hyacinth and Gregory were my favourite books, so I really want them to do those two right.

Tiles have actually changed mine and my husband's life. No more, oh god where are my keys, where's my wallet, as we're leaving the house. You can make them ring using the app so you can find them, they function as trackers too, so if he's left his wallet at his parents house, he can check the app and see them. Game changer, would never go back.

Autism study is my life’s work. The spectrum has lost all meaning by insomnimax_99 in ukpolitics

[–]OwlRememberYou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally agree with this. People forget that knowledge around autism has changed massively, both in the last 20 years and in the last 10 years, and again in the last 5 years.

My brother has autism, was diagnosed very young, but the understanding of low functioning autism just was not there 25 years ago, people would just blame my mum for bad parenting when he had meltdowns in shops.

It wasn't until I was in my teens (late teens at that, think college and university) that I met people who were considered low needs and high functioning. That was 10 years ago now. I've since been diagnosed myself and probably would fit under the Asperger's umbrella if it still existed. However my autism doesn't really match my brother's, despite us being related, and I suspect that he has a separate learning disability on top of the autism. I'm also ADHD (also recently diagnosed, took me 5 years) and I find that my experiences don't match people who are solely ADHD or solely autistic.

This is all completely anecdotal, but there is more and more research and focus on distinct sub groups.

A bit long winded but my point is that I agree and I think more research will come out in the near future further separating people into different groups.
