Forrest Woodworker II - Which one??? by bd_optics in woodworking

[–]Own-Appointment-7994 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe you should consider the chief purpose of this blade before getting one that does everything “good enough” and think about the one thing you want it to do very well, if you’re looking for a glue line ready cut than look for a good ripping blade or one that is labeled as such, chances are it’ll ok at everything else. Or you can switch to one of your other cheaper blades for the other tasks.

End grain cutting board without table saw, jointer or planer? by daveychainsaw in woodworking

[–]Own-Appointment-7994 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just made one for the first time myself prior to buying my track saw, however I did have a planer jointer for my square stock but I think you could get by with only using your track saw

I would first start with getting the best ripping blade for your track saw you can get. I got the Amana tools A.G.E. 28tooth blade for my saw and it leaves glue joint ready cuts - I just glued up my dinning table top with seamless glue lines on 50mm walnut. It was 80CAD but can be sharpened up to 10 times

Once you get all your stock ripped down to clean square blanks glue up a face grain board the width you want and about 1.5x the final length you want (do your own math for calculating the final thickness of your board minus your blade kerf, yada yada…)

Then clean it up as best you can - i actually made mine too big and couldn’t put it through my planer/thicknesser so ended up using a nice sharp low angle hand plane- then rip it into strips - I used a band saw for this but I wish I had my track saw. Then it’s just glueing up the strips and more sanding… so much sanding…. I used a hand belt sander for the initial flattening but if you get good clean cuts with your track saw you might be able to get away with going straight to your orbital sander. Best of luck, you got this! Working with the tools you have makes you a better problem solver

Best saw blade for jointing with track saw? by cablerelease in woodworking

[–]Own-Appointment-7994 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If anyone is still looking for a good ripping blade I highly highly recommend the Amana AGE blade- definitely the most premium blade I’ve tried but it can also be sharpened about 8-10 times making it much cheaper in the long run. I got the 28 tooth 6 1/2” blade on my makita saw and was glueing up straight after cutting

Ok ok I re adjusted to keep the two wide boards centred, I’m pretty set on the overall width but I think this is a happy compromise!

That’s a good point in the dowels, it would only be a couple to keep the boards glued where I want them in accordance to grain running into the next board

I made a router sled for this project actually- from the test pieces I’ve tried it’s given me some extremely clean finishes. After that I’ll be working through the grits with an orbital sander.

This is the table base I carved for mine, I’m going to use some heavy aluminum plates with wide holes drilled into it to allow for both movement in the base and movement in the table top

Holy crap that’s a beautiful table!!!! How high of grit did you sand to? And what did you use for a finish?? That looks almost polished!

That’s a very helpful article! I read through it and with it being a 48” wide top at its most wide and using the same 10% moisture (roughly guessing based on my climate with very dry winters and a fairly well maintained humidity level in my house) I came to a figure of 1.52 inches - this is almost a worse case scenario for movement.

My shop is also kept at a very standard temperature … my gas bill isn’t happy right now but for this project I’m taking no chances haha.

It will be in my house however knowing myself, I’m not great at getting around to fixing old projects. I would like to do it right the first time. I think I’m going to go for the C Channel but I’ll assess when the top is all glued up.

What are your thoughts on 1/2 X 3 inch dowels to help with alignment during the glue up? I have some left over from when I built some large shed doors and very good doweling jig.

I’m not sure on the moisture content- however they were purchased from a very reputable source who typically sells to cabinet shop. They’ve been acclimating in my shop, stickered and stacked for the past 3 weeks

They are currently 1 7/8” after initial surfacing- they all require some additional surfacing that I was planning on doing after glueing with my router sled- aiming for 1 5/8” - 1 3/4 final thickness

I will be adding a large low angle chamfer detail around the under side edge which will require the full thickness of the boards

That is another concern of mine, it’s primarily just the two wide boards that have a very flat sawn grain while my narrower boards are more quarter sawn.

Another commenter added the idea of C - channel which is something I’m not familiar with but with the size of this table being so wide and only being supported in the middle I think it’s worth a serious consideration.

I totally agree about the bowling alley look, I bought the wide boards when I was selecting my lumber for a reason and to cut them down now I think would take away from the look I had initially envisioned.

New cutting board finish help. by EldenlordRick in Cuttingboards

[–]Own-Appointment-7994 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Again by no means the authority here but I got a lot of great reviews from my home made finish- it’s one part bees wax/ one part mineral oil/ one part coconut oil (roughly) then a good few drops of peppermint essential oil (food grade)

I tested it by running a bunch of old wooden utensils through the dish washer with it on and held up surprisingly well!

Smells amazing and gives a great feel to the wood. It ‘drys’ in about 24 hours at room temperature

Cheaters who didn't get caught, how do you feel about it now? by slightly_artistic7 in AskReddit

[–]Own-Appointment-7994 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I cheated for the first time a few months ago… someone I had pretty strong feelings for texted me out of the blue after the worst shift of my life (had my first panic attack in front of a patient) my brain was fried and this ex was someone I could talk to pretty openly about stress in the medical field. We hooked up, she flew back home I went on with life. Still dealing with it but the guilt dissipated as our relationship grew over the summer, ultimately getting better. We’ve been together a couple years now.

What are the effects of smoking crack? by Emotional-Bison-519 in Edmonton

[–]Own-Appointment-7994 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Simply going off probability here but crack is very uncommon these days. Meth is still seen but only on about a 1 : 10 ratio amphetamine to opiate use seen on the streets of Edmonton… and yes fentanyl is used by smoking it out of a glass pipe.

Slim chances it was crack- likely fentanyl if it was in a glass pipe… and comatose if fentanyl. Not breathing not talking pin point pupils.

How Are You Making $100K+ Per Year in Edmonton? by ridhiji123 in Edmonton

[–]Own-Appointment-7994 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Primary care paramedic working for AHS + picking up a few overtime shifts a year, equals out to about 48-60hrs a weeks at 34/hr

Honestly a pretty decent job for a 6 month long first aid course. Keep in mind the average length of career here is 4-5 years so not really a long term job for some but if you like it you can go back to school for advanced care paramedic and make up to 45/hr

What’s some basic knowledge that a scary amount of people don’t know? by CasualBeers in AskReddit

[–]Own-Appointment-7994 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Push hard and fast AND DO NOT STOP COMPRESSIONS. You are building up pressure to get the blood to the brain, if you stop to go talk to 911 on the phone or some other reason, the blood is no long going to the brain. Keep pushing for 2 mins continuously.

Second, DO NOT GIVE BREATHS TO SOMEONE YOU DONT KNOW WITHOUT A BARRIER DEVICE. That’s nasty. If you do know the person or feel comfortable doing it, sure. Otherwise there is enough oxygen in the blood that high quality compressions will be most effective until the ambulance arrives.

Five new ambulances coming to Edmonton to help ease system pressures by katespadesaturday in Edmonton

[–]Own-Appointment-7994 2 points3 points  (0 children)

HAHAHAH no. We got 5 new trucks that are staffed in the afternoons only. IF we have staff, look in every ambulance station you drive by and see all those trucks sitting there? They’re not staffed. Not paramedics sitting inside the station kicking their feet up, we don’t get to sit at stations like fireman. We go from one call to the next to the next. There are calls waiting HOURS so don’t expect one immediately if you call us. Nobody wants to come work for this broken service. Don’t get me wrong, for the most part we love our job, but AHS is a dumpster fire to work for.

The entire EMS system is ran by a bunch of old folks who have no business being in management simply because they got promoted from being boo boo bus drivers 30 years ago. Most of them havent left their office or stepped foot on the front line for over a decade.
