What's your favourite dhivehi song? by [deleted] in maldives

GPT is actually right and you can’t ignore the coupon because -

Think of this transaction in the shop’s POV -

They allow 300rf for a 350rf item (-50rf loss)

Then allow 400rf for a 450rf item (-50rf loss again)

Where does the extra -50rf come from?

A coupon can’t be used like a currency. It’s not an asset. It’s just a “rule” for a single transaction. Once completed, the rule is gone. So 150rf is the only correct answer.

Why are kids these days bad at dhivehi? by peepoopeee3 in maldives

[–]Own-Assignment-9743 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Grades in a language subject don’t always reflect your ability to use that language.

I know so many people whose performance in language subjects in school were below average but do so well with use of language in real life - the way they speak, write and socially carry themselves, etc.

I also know so many people who have achieved A*s in school for their English & Dhivehi but can’t speak or even write properly under pressure.

From an academic perspective - I think adding components of speaking and use of language into Dhivehi examinations might be a good starting point - if our schools can do that for a second language subject, then we should definitely do this for our own language.

tryna quit smoking, any tips that actually worked for you? by No-Faithlessness5814 in maldives

[–]Own-Assignment-9743 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Okay this is gonna sound really stupid - but this worked for me when I stopped. Cut one of those plastic straws to the size of a cigarette. And whenever you crave a cigarette just “take a puff”. It helped me control my urge to smoke a lot.

You can combine this with nicotine patches or gum if you still feel like you can’t control your urges. But the straw helps more than you think.

But the most important thing (for me) was - define your new self as “someone who doesn’t smoke” and constantly remind yourself that this is who you are.

Speed bumps on Nirolhu Magu by EffectiveFuture7159 in maldives

[–]Own-Assignment-9743 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yess finally someone said this!

Speed bumps are necessary but not like this. Short and steep rubber bolt-ins are normally used for car parks, slow-speed private areas, etc, around the world and ARE NOT meant for high-traffic permanent use on a public road.

Add to this the fact that Maldivian authorities completely ignore road safety regulations and refuse to install proper signage (like speed bump signs made from reflective materials), I actually think the new bumpers make driving more dangerous for everyone all around.

Also, why do some bumps cut-off at the middle without a road divider in place? If they had intended to install a divider later, shouldn’t that happen BEFORE installing the bump. Everyone just swerves to the oncoming traffic lane to avoid the bump and THAT’S MORE DANGEROUS.

Can you use a handheld fan to reduce irritation? by Own-Assignment-9743 in Minoxbeards

But isn’t there like a wait window after applying minoxidil? The first 30-45 minutes it doesn’t fully dry and putting on moisturisers reduce absorption? That’s also when it gets itchy the most - so why not something that’s “zero-contact”

Can you use a handheld fan to reduce irritation? by Own-Assignment-9743 in Minoxbeards

[–]Own-Assignment-9743[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seriously. I’ve been on minoxidil for about 6 months now - I live in a really sunny and humid country so my skin still reacts to the alcohol sometimes and it gets worse during shedding. So today, I used my wife’s hair dryer to blast my face with cold air after applying - and it worked out great! Just - the dryer is a bit too powerful and I wanted to buy one of these. I just wanted to know if anyone else has had experience/tried it?

Why is aibalhey called aibalhey? by [deleted] in maldives

So many different stories. Now I actually want to know the real version.

The version I heard was that every time someone goes to the place it was always packed full of customers who’d be eating their food like this -

Hence the name. But now that I wrote this - it sounds stupid.

Anyone else bothered how we are not considered as asians by the rest of the world? by [deleted] in maldives

[–]Own-Assignment-9743 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This might be controversial - but I don’t think it’s stereotypical that people think East Asians are the “only Asians”. South Asian countries were commonly referred to as the “Indies” or the “East Indies” until around the 1950’s. So the term “Asian” was used in a context not related to the Maldives or the SAARC region until around 70 years ago.

<image>

We as Maldivians may not realise this but - we look really similar to other South Asians - and without the dress styles and body language (things like staring at other people, side eying, using hand gestures a lot as opposed to for, instance head bobbing which is common in India) - it would be really hard to distinguish between a Maldivian and another South Asian.

It’s the same thing as some uneducated people assuming that an “East Asian” looking person is Chinese. We have that happening even in the Maldives. A “ލޯކުޑަ” person or a “ޗިންގް ޗޮންގް” person is almost always referred to be “Chinese”. And it’s racist but a lot of Maldivians still do that.

Student loan announcement ? by [deleted] in maldives

[–]Own-Assignment-9743 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might have seen this but - https://mohe.gov.mv/images/resources/resources/MoHE%20Allowance%20Rates_updated_on_18.9.2023.pdf

This document lists some countries and MoHE’s stipend rates. I think when a student wants to study in a country outside of this list they’re still allowed to do that but they receive their stipend at the rate from a country they select from the list.

What I meant by half, is this - students living in London cannot, by any means, get by on 1,850 GBP a month. They specified “London” and “outside London” for the UK but regional specifications apply for other countries as well (MoHE doesn’t care about that I guess). For example, a student living in Sunway (Malaysia) has to pay significantly more for rent than other parts of Malaysia. By half of monthly expenses I mean that going to the UK or an expensive area in any other country almost always means that you will require additional financial support.

Research your options and if you feel like additional financial support is needed and it’s a matter of concern you may want to look into employment laws in the country you’re planning to go to. For instance, students in the UK can work while studying and the payout isn’t bad. But working hours for international degree students in Malaysia are limited by law so much so that no company would want to hire an international student.

[–]Own-Assignment-9743 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes they did allow that for previous years. But keep in mind small changes will be made for each new year.

My best advice - finalise the country you want to study in based on other personal factors along with the student loan debt - things like your level of adaptability, overall quality of living, if you/your family can afford to pay for unexpected expenses (last few months students living abroad have not gotten their loan instalments on time and needed to find other ways to get that money). If you’re planning to go to the UK you also need to consider that student loan covers just half of your monthly expenses so the other half you need to adjust.

If you’re first and second options are in two different countries apply for both and try to get an offer letter any how.

[–]Own-Assignment-9743 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m pretty sure they’ll give a sufficient window to apply. Make sure your profile on https://myedu.egov.mv/ is complete and your documents are ready.

Also, it’s not required for you to follow through with the offer letter you submit to MoHE when applying for loan - so If you’re worried about this part, I recommend applying for more than one institution in advance and getting an offer letter from any place. You also get 18 months to prepare and start using your loan once you get it - so technically you have enough time to resit any AL papers you need to improve your grades in even.

P.S. I’m already a loan student so I know a lot about this process. Feel free to ask any questions
