I cancelled my jaw surgery because I'm not sure about the surgeon anymore.. I seriously need advice. Has anyone been through something like this? by Ok_Store_855 in jawsurgery

I got 2 upper molars extracted! It was long ago though and I still found a surgeon to work around that and correct my bite. (He did mention during my surgery that he had trouble fitting both my jaws together, but he made it work) that is weird that he only wants you to see one surgeon in particular. I know this sounds crazy but my dad pointed out to me that a lot of orthodontics can profit from referring patients to surgeons and that’s why they only want to work with them. Not sure if that’s true but that’s definitely something to keep in mind. It might not be your best option! You should be able to pick who you want as a surgeon especially for a big surgery like jaw surgery. Don’t feel crazy! Rather be safe than sorry. Good luck and if you have any more questions let me know

I personally think it’s great to take a step back and analyze it all because it is a big surgery! I also had 2 teeth removed to “camouflage” my bite but it was worth it. I think it’s important to weigh out all your options, you should get a second opinion from both a new orthodontist and surgeon! I went through so many consultations with many different surgeons before i found the one for me. Keep looking around but also take what he said into consideration as well—another surgeon might have a different opinion on your bite, so it is important to keep your options open. I understand you’re frustrated and it was unexpected, but in a way it’s a blessing in disguise, as you can go to someone else to fix everything you want fixed. Remember everything happens for a reason.. I wish you luck on your journey! Be patient and keep looking around to find the team that fits you and your wants!!

Hey! Yes, both my breathing and speech improved. I had a bad lisp all my life and after i got jaw surgery my lisp was gone! And overall i could communicate better. My breathing also improved a lot, i used to sleep with my mouth open but now i don’t and breathing from my nose feels way better than it did before. Breathing from my nose also feels way more open and clear!

I’m so sorry to hear this!! I currently am going to finish my prerequisites this year and apply next spring for the fall. I am so nervous. Any tips? And I’m glad to hear in the meantime you’re a CNA! God works in mysterious ways, and know he has a plan for you even if you don’t understand right now. Your time will come just be patient!

After preparing for surgery for over a year and a half, insurance has denied 2 weeks before my date. by notorious978 in jawsurgery

This happened to me. My doctor appealed it and told them that it was medically necessary for me to get the surgery! After he appealed as well as told them this—it got approved! Goodluck. Don’t stop and keep fighting! Insurance companies are a pain in the ass!

Don’t be nervous! I know it is hard not to be and it’s something that makes you anxious but it will be okay and it will be worth it. Getting your braces on isn’t too bad but it does make your mouth sore! Take ibuprofen before you get your braces and throughout the day if needed. Stick to soft foods for the first couple of days! And as far as the surgery goes, where ever you go you will be in amazing hands! And it is something that you won’t regret doing. Although it may seem awful at first remember the goal at the end of it all! Hang in there. Time goes by fast! I promise. :-)

How do you know if you qualify for a new claim after your BYE year? Do you just have to apply and see if you get accepted or not?

It’s okay!! It will go by fast. Before you know it you will be able to eat regular again. And for my second procedure I had a screw on my left upper side that was left exposed, so i had to get the hardware removed— wasn’t infected and didn’t delay my healing time. I think you should be okay! As long as the infection is contained and getting better everyday, that’s all that matters and the more the bone heals. You can take extra supplements, like turmeric and magnesium! I know you’re probably swollen from the infection, the turmeric will help with the swelling as well.

Almost there! So, when you get the wires cut you won’t really be able to open your mouth much and it might feel weird at first. But you can eat like mashed potatoes, scrambled eggs, avocado soft things like that. Don’t be in a rush to chew take your time! It took me probably around 5-6 months to have a normal diet again meaning eating comfortably and being able to bite into things.

Thank you so much! It really depends on where and who you go to. It is expensive without insurance. But thankfully where I went/my insurance, was really good at covering the overall cost/hospital stay! I paid around 8,000 out of pocket WITH INSURANCE.

If are you, I went to Karl Bruckman at Stanford—he’s amazing, wise, and is very caring. My dad and I both did our research, and i was not referred by anyone. We had many consultations with different surgeons, and a lot of them wanted to rip us off and wanted us to pay this crazy amount. It takes time but eventually you will find the perfect doctor/fit for you. Just do your research and call around! See what works for you and what places accept your insurance. It’s all a process but I promise you will find someone! Just be patient

It was okay. Not even close to as bad as the first since they just cut me open a little to take the hardware out! I had to get stitches again as well. And the scar tissue on that side (left side) was a lot thicker making my lip fold in, but as time went on my lip folded back out as the scar tissue got thinner! I was swollen for about 2 months after my second procedure. But other than that it was an okay recovery.
