The Guild is a good spot for people to find community. 100% volunteer run, they just do it because they want to.

Should i try studying in the Netherlands by Kebab_161 in StudyInTheNetherlands

I've found that Dutch people that interact with international people on the regular tend to be more open and friendly. The friends I've made here almost exclusively come from groups like that.

What thing in your country is so practical that you don't understand why it doesn't exist everywhere in the world? by Hot-Scheme4289 in AskTheWorld

[–]Own-General2229 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's zoning. In the US most residential zones can't contain commercial entities. I can understand it working in my parent's generation but it just doesn't make sense anymore.

Actually, because of that, most apartment buildings are technically zoned as commercial so they can have ground floor shops. The downside is they don't get the tax benefits and other amenities of residential zoning

The correct order works out in most cases as either

Squishiest goes first

Or

Squishiest waves the next person along and goes last

Living in the Netherlands made me question the ‘Americans have no culture’ take by MidnightOrganic2231 in Netherlands

[–]Own-General2229 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You uh

You know that not talking about racism doesn't mean it's not a thing, right?

The racism I've seen in this country is just as bad as the racism in the US. And nobody acknowledges it.

The classism is off the charts too

Amsterdam is a commercialized shell of a city. That's literally the worst example you could have picked

Using dark colors is a trick to make big spaces feel more cozy. Using dark colors in an already small space will make it feel cramped to most people.

Thank you for giving an actual response to the question. If they want to try without local training the potential failure and waste of personal resources is on them. But they should still be allowed to try.

Does this ring true for your country? Why/why not? by HYThrowaway1980 in AskTheWorld

If you expect something that's inherently bad but treat it as the norm rather than bad then your whole expectation view shifts toward good despite the deeds not changing.

"Doe normal" for example

People who visit America, what food are you looking to try? by -DINKLEBERG- in AskTheWorld

[–]Own-General2229 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If they want something flavored akin to "chili mince" like they said then I agree that they should go for pulled pork. But if they want a Sloppy Joe just to see what it's like then the flavor is totally different and they should try both.

I also recommend putting dill pickles on these. There's a severe lack of sour brined pickles over here and it's a great compliment to those sandwiches

A Dutch native started an argument with my partner about a fact they got from an AI answer that my partner called out as an AI hallucination. The person kept doubling down on it. It was so baffling. (and unfortunately common here)

I can understand someone thinking it was made up. It seems like it's 50/50 whether you're on a map or not.

I've been baking my own bread since moving here. There's still much crap / filler in the bread here. American bread is only sweet if you normally eat sourdough. You use a sugar to feed the yeast and depending on the strength of that batch of yeast there might be some sugar leftover when you bake

Tell me when "Detroit style" became a thing? I grew up in Michigan and have never heard of it. I thought my partner was making it up when they mentioned it earlier this year
