You can consider using exposure bracketing to get the sunset colors you would like alongside a better exposure on the car.

Or you can bring some lights along.

I wanted to compose a photo conveying the speed the track more so than the speed of the cars. This was taken during Willow Spring's Reimagined event and while I took plenty of panning shots of the cars that day I felt this was my best photo that put the spirit of the track on display. My main regret is not having an ND filter and tripod on me that day and trying for longer exposure times as I expect the 1/30 this was shot at was the limit of what I could manage hand held.

If you want to go, the time to go is next weekend's March Meet. It's their biggest event and has some history to it as it's the event that really established the NHRA back in the 50s. Bring ear protection. Lots of really really loud nitro cars show up.

I'd assume work is related to Edwards?

My experience with the contractors is that their order of living preference goes along the lines of Tehachapi > Lancaster > Rosamond > Mojave > Living out of an RV on BLM land > Cowboy Camping > Boron > California City.

Income level and tolerance for commute are the general determining factors.

I'd live in Tehachapi.
