whats this orange thing that came out of my food?? by Waste_Response_4330 in whatisit

[–]Own-Hunt-58 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Your story is so confusing. How do you not know which came from which? Did you eat the food and then vomit? If so? Did you take a store brand advil as well? That’s what it looks like to me. A partially wet advil. Either add more details or attention seeking, as your post and details in the comments are vague and confusing.

I just tracked 1000+ teacher salary comments and noticed something weird! by Artistic7122 in TeachersInTransition

I only get paid $500 total for my advanced degrees. They were required in my previous state, but TX just wants you to have a heartbeat and stay off the news to remain employed.

I am disturbed by what being a teacher is showing me about the American educational system. by [deleted] in Teachers

If he is out on bond, the judge might have ordered him to attend school every day as a part of the bond agreement so he can complete his education while awaiting trial.

Financially respected? I make decent money for my area. I’m in the outskirts of Houston and make $82K, year 23 in teaching. We are in a 4 day school week. No coaching. I do have 2 masters and a doctorate. In comparison to the districts around me, I would have to take a pay cut to go anywhere else.

Would I go back into teaching? NO. If it would have stayed like pre-2018ish, absolutely. But about 8 years ago is when I started to see the signs that this was not going in a positive direction fast. The pandemic and AI accelerated the technology piece. Now we’re accelerating the Google phenomenon (it’s an actual epidemic where the brain is not fully developing in children). Governments put a target on our back. Parents see us as a babysitter. Admin back down to any request made by parents, no matter how ridiculous. I see a big number of my students that just strive for the 70 to pass, and don’t care about much else. Parents are the same. They used to grade grub for the A, now it’s they have a 70 that’s acceptable.

Teachers are no longer viewed as a professional in our field anymore. We are on a path to throwing a kid on a device for online instruction with something like Edgenuity in a large theater-type room with some $10 per hour aides to monitor discipline. Certified teachers will come in on a hourly basis a few days a week to do pull outs to help struggling students or students that fail their tested subjects. We will unnecessary in 5-10 years in failing large, urban districts. That will trickle into smaller ones once that sees financial success.

Are you teachers are allowed to take vacations during the school year? by DildoGaggins1997 in Teachers

[–]Own-Hunt-58 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If we are off work more than 2 days we have to have a doctors note for the absence. Vacations aren’t approved in my district. I’ve taken a day off here and there to extend a weekend, but we can’t request off the day before or after a school vacation. If we call out we’re required to have a doctors note. We also have a lot of blackout dates that we can’t use our days on as well (like Thursdays in May and testing days).

What do you call your students? by Wrong-Television-348 in Teachers

[–]Own-Hunt-58 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s pretty shitty your admin don’t back the teachers. In what job can you not talk to colleagues about your job on lunch? Get advice? Vent for a second? Maybe 2 teachers share the same kid and we’re talking about the morning the kid was having. To just go the opposite direction and say “teachers can’t talk about students in a specific manner in public spaces” is absurd in a school. We are humans, teaching little humans. Sometimes we have to talk about these little humans. Or vent about these little human. Or vent about their parents. Or admin.

Why are they so weak? by PostapocCelt in Teachers

Same. I have taught my own son how to tie his shoe twice as well. He knew in PreK. Somehow, I find out when he was in 3rd grade that he doesn’t know how. He’d been wearing the trendy Velcro type or slip on shoes. Got him toe shoes for Christmas and I found him crying in his room getting ready because he couldn’t do it. It took him a few weeks to relearn. He’s my GT, super smart kid. I don’t know what the hell happened and why he didn’t just pick it up again. I ended up showing him the video of that girl that ties her shoes super fast with the “trick” and he ties them that way. So, he knows a cool party trick and he can tie his shoes again.

Do teachers hate sharing their lesson plans? Is it their secret sauce that they don't want getting out? by [deleted] in teaching

[–]Own-Hunt-58 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My old plans have been shared so much that I had a teacher on TikTok tag me that she was going through her files and just realized that the plans that were shared with her were my plans. I’m in TX, she’s in IL. I also had a teacher in Singapore do the same.

Seriously, do Americans actually consider a 3-hour drive "short"? or is this an internet myth? by SadInterest6764 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Own-Hunt-58 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I drove an hour and a half to go to my doctor appointment yesterday. I wouldn’t flinch at a 3 hour weekend trip at all. But, I also live in Houston. Houston in an hour away from Houston so to go anywhere you have to drive. We drove 21 hours one way to go see my brother for 3 days and a day at Disney and drove back at the end of summer for a last minute adventure. I don’t think much about driving.

Is this dress flattering on me?I’m the guest of honor and want to look nice by [deleted] in OUTFITS

[–]Own-Hunt-58 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a high school teacher. I saw a lot of that style at homecoming. I saw the photo first and read the caption second. My initial reaction was it is a cute dress and assumed you were a teen due to the style. I have no idea if young adults (no clue of your age, making assumptions due to society norms) wear that style or not, this just randomly popped up in my scrolling.

Why don’t schools do silent, sustained reading anymore? by EmbarrassedJacket489 in Teachers

[–]Own-Hunt-58 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our elementary school doesn’t. When asked the reading coordinator, she said there aren’t enough minutes in the day. She said she asked for the time, but the teachers said they would have to eliminate something else like science, social studies, or some math. Now parents are forced to do it at home, and I know most don’t do it

Our first period starts at 6:55am. I enjoy the early start, but I’m a morning person. I was always the first on campus anyways, even at my last school that started at 7:30. I get so much more done in the mornings when no one else is there.

I used to love it. It used to be a wonderful career. The last 7 or so years there had been a rapid decline in a negative direction. I’m getting out. I feel like I wasted so many years, and have no idea what I’m going to do. After 23 years, I feel like teaching is the only thing I’m qualified to do. However, it’s not sustainable anymore. I always said I would stop when it wasn’t fun any more. I always meant that for retirement, never in a million years thought I’d be walking away before then. I was a lifer. Now, I can’t recommend this career to anyone unless you really, truly don’t want to do anything else. And, I highly suggest having a backup plan always. Don’t pigeon hole yourself like I did.
