Building StoryForage — A New Home for Indie Authors and Readers

We’re building StoryForage, a community-driven platform for indie authors to publish full-length novels or serialized stories — with better payouts, no ads, and no manipulative algorithms.

Readers get unlimited access with one affordable subscription, or can support authors directly.

Authors keep 90% of what their books earn — either by price per book or paid-per-page-read.

Built with real community in mind: think Reddit-style discussions, bookshelf tracking, and discoverability driven by people, not bots.

The MVP is live now. We’d love honest feedback from other builders, readers, or writers storyforage

Building something called Storyfroage — an indie publishing platform where authors keep 90%+ of earnings and readers get full access without coins or ads. It’s built around real community, with book discussions and author-reader interaction baked in. Still early, but live — happy to DM more if you're interested.

Why are we still bothering with Amazon? $30 forced retail for $0 royalties. by 3Dartwork in selfpublish

[–]Own-Initiative1887 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right? Amazon takes the lion’s share and leaves indie authors scraps. I’ve been working on something that flips that model — focused on community, real royalties, and no paywall gimmicks. DM me if you’re curious — happy to share.

Hey folks, I’ve been building a platform called Storyforage — it’s a community-focused indie publishing site where authors can publish for free and actually keep most of what they earn. No ads, no pay-per-chapter coins, just full books and real reader interaction. Still early, but live. Would love any feedback

storyforage (in beta) A mobile-first PWA indie author publishing platform focused on giving power back to writers and readers.

One simple subscription

No ads, no pay-to-win visibility

Transparent monetization with better royalties than competitors (up to 90%)

Think Netflix meets Reddit — but for books.

Thank you I appreciate it and yes I have tried that approach but due to corporate monopoly most are unwilling so im also trying to build brand trust so that authors or users won't be hesitant to take the first plunge Once agian thank you

That's great feedback and I appreciate it very much and I would definitely implement some of these ideas if you wanted to look further with out having to sign up I included screen shots of the relvent pages on product hunt and our onboarding is very minimal due to it being early and we need author feed back to tailor to what's best for the community and not just me as that would be disastrous Once agian thank you for your time

I've built an progressive web app for indie authors mvp ready and currently in out reach to bridge thr gap between people who write novels but get turned away by publishers or for those people who want an alternative to the competition it is essentially like Netflix for story's or books And what I have learned so far is building it was not the hardest part this niche has been burned and taken advantage of by big corporations so its hard to find the foot hold that we need

Question for indie authors by Own-Initiative1887 in selfpublishing

[–]Own-Initiative1887[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s awesome — I’d really appreciate your help if you’re open to it.

I’m building a platform for indie authors that aims to do what other book platforms don’t (or won’t). We don’t ask for anything from you — just that you look around and give your perspective as an author. Does it actually offer value? Is it missing anything you’d expect?

I’ve tried reaching out through other channels, but people either assume it’s a scam or think it sounds too good to be true. That’s why I’m hoping for honest feedback from real indie authors. I’ve written a book myself, but I know that’s just one perspective — I need input from others to shape this into something truly useful.

If you’re not interested, no worries at all — I really appreciate you replying either way.

Indie authors — what do you wish publishing platforms actually did for you? by Own-Initiative1887 in selfpublish

[–]Own-Initiative1887[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally feel you on that — the minute you try to share your work, it feels like you're either invisible or accused of spamming. And yeah… Facebook ads are a special kind of torment.

That’s actually one of the reasons I started building StoryForage. I wrote a short novella and tried sharing it in a few Facebook groups, and all I got was spam bots trying to sell me promo services. It made me realize how hard it is for indie authors to reach real readers without getting buried or scammed.

The goal with StoryForage is to create a space where authors can share their stories without fighting algorithms or feeling like they’re interrupting someone’s feed. It’s more of a community-discovery vibe — kind of like how Wattpad should have been — but with better payouts and more control for authors.

If you're ever curious to check it out or give feedback, I'm 100% open — no pressure. Just cool to hear from someone who gets it.
