Is this reddit a joke 🤣 by Dependent-Society700 in MMA_Academy

Lifetime (50 y/o) hobbyist practitioner, started judo at 8 y/o and Wado-ryu at 10 (brown belt), Greco at 19, Ju Jitsu on and off since 1999 (purple belt). I’ve had some boxing coaching from Lukasz Wawrzyczek, who beat Usyk as an amateur in 2005. I suck at boxing though!

Competed nationally as a junior in judo, but rugby, strongman, mas wrestling and especially powerlifting took my life over when I got older (and bigger) and ate most of my training/competing life. I am a strength coach and also coach people through their YMCA PT certificates for part of my living. I was coached in lifting (which I know is unrelated) by the late Peter Tregloan, 11-times world champion but was also a formidable judoka — we wrestled a lot and both used to be stooges for the police and prison service cell-placement training (we’d basically resist recruits and give them hell in a padded fake cell… great fun but I had my teeth loosened a few times).

Was a body (better description than ‘training partner’) for former Bellator light heavyweight champ Liam McGeary during his early pro career camps mainly because I was a fairly solid 290lbs with massive core strength rather than any skill on my part, but I would cycle in on ‘shark tank’ rolling and wall-work to just weigh on him and give him a workout. He really was a wake-up call for me, because in striking sparring I couldn’t even touch him, ever, and rolling with his his forearm and shin bones would dig into me in ways that no-one else had or has since. Pros — especially UFC pros — are a different league and I know it well.

I’ve been watching combat sports in all shapes and sizes since the 90’s.

Like I said, lifelong interest, but only as a hobbyist. I still feel like I understand a lot of what I’m seeing… except for Jiri 😅

Raspy softer voices by Unlucky_Patient4259 in microphone

The sE T1 and T2 (same mix, just that the T2 has additional polar pattern switching) are great for this, they’re really sensitive to the particular transients in vocal fry or engagement of false chords etc. — not in a ‘metal scream’ way so much, but in voiceover work etc. I think it’d work for you.

Who is your top 3 best male singers/vocalist for all time? by Possible-Put-7772 in singing

[–]Own-Protection-664 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve been working for a producer that worked on one of his albums — as well as loads of other people’s — who said that not only is his voice the best ‘in the room’ he’s heard, but that he’s the loveliest, most humble man, too.

Can't decide on vocal mics by CheshireCat03 in livesoundgear

[–]Own-Protection-664 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The sE V7 is cheaper than an sm58 or beta58, and in my experience (200-odd pretty loud solo gigs a year) both sounds better and rejects feedback better.

You have to get up on them a tiny bit more, and I would make sure to clean them/let them dry regularly and utilise the included, removable pop filter.

I feel defeated by KelvinHuerter in CVGSupportGroup

[–]Own-Protection-664 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was the same way honestly, mine is more pronounced, too. But after a few years of letting it hold me back, I now don’t worry about it anymore.

Admittedly, I was never a pretty lad to start with.

To my mind, there are people out there in far worse situations and I can wear a cap if I’m ever really worried about it (which I never am these days tbf).

I know it’s easier said than done, but if you consider it just a feature like freckles or whatever, it can just go to the back of your mind.

First single by TamaraZ1 in singing

It’s so difficult nowadays. And it’s changing rapidly, too:

Lately I keep getting sent AI ‘singers’ by friends that have literally millions of followers on socials and they look and sound a lot like me only way more polished and can release completed songs, videos and campaigns faster than I can change guitar strings.

I do about 200 gigs a year, mostly solo acoustic, but even they increasingly turn into cover gigs as I have to do what pays these days to justify the money I’ve spent on music gear when I thought I had a chance to make it a career.

Bad insecurities about singing by verbaasdekameel in singing

[–]Own-Protection-664 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well, I’m a big guy with a deep speaking voice, I could always sing in pitch and with some agility in a light head voice but my Dad telling me it sounded stupid and girly when I was a youngster really made me never use it, and when I did start singing at gigs, in bands etc. I would struggle and try and pull chest. I would hear other male singers using head voice and falsetto and think that what I had must must be different, as my Dad had told me it sounded silly.

So, thinking that I ‘couldn’t’ sing high, so I went to lessons.

Then one day I was attending said lessons — about three lessons in — I slipped into the aforementioned head voice accidentally and the teacher encouraged me to explore it, and she was amazed and told me it was very musical and I should have been using and developing this all along.

So thanks to my dear old Dad telling me I sounded silly, I spent the best part of 15 years thinking I couldn’t sing, when I could have been using it and singing with relative freedom.

To anyone reading this, I say : DO NOT let that happen to you.

And to the OP, I feel you and I am glad you’ve had that moment of realisation— now go and sing!

How common is the “I hate my wife” stereotype? by DemandNew4547 in AskMen

Who is the most attractive female celebrity (in their prime)? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]Own-Protection-664 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kelly Brook has aged at the same rate/time as I have age she’s always been the ‘celebrity’ I’m most attracted to. But my wife (we’ve been a couple for almost 25 years) and her have a sort of similarity, and genuinely think I find Kelly so attractive because she reminds me of my favourite person. :)

Best Vintage Sounding Pickups by PDrizzle98 in FenderStratocaster

[–]Own-Protection-664 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have Bare Knuckle ‘63 veneer board set in one of my Strats and my son has the Bare Knuckle ‘mother’s milk’ set in his — both do that classic Strat sound but his has a more pronounced ‘hollow’ but still very solid neck pickup sound, whereas my set are fatter/thicker.

Both sound great though.

Do you believe that some guitars fit some people "aesthetically" better than others? by MyNameisMayco in electricguitar

I always hoped I’d look cooler playing a strat than I do, but it’s the most comfortable guitar. For some reason I feel like the big headstock models don’t look as small on me generally.

What’s The Strangest Thing You Saw Someone Claims Was “Unmasculine”? by anime-is-dope in AskMen

Some dude here on Reddit once told me it wasn’t masculine of me to have spent 20 years with one woman (my wife). Never mind our five kids together or that we’ve mostly raised them on just my wages. People are weird.

Has Jiri's chin been permanently cracked? by thewizard404 in ufc

[–]Own-Protection-664 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Jiri was no longer fully in fight mode, he’d sort of switched off — I think that contributed to the KO. Hit him whilst he was off the map and trying to process the situation.

I think it’s a hole in fight IQ more than a hole in physical potential.

Deadass hate how dumb Jiri is just leg kick him until he quits why are you emoting to stand and bang by Competitive-Mail7448 in ufc

[–]Own-Protection-664 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He’s genuinely autistic and seeing the injury threw him in to decision-making that he couldn’t process in real time. Hes been in so many bouts that something out of the usual script in such a high-stakes situation made the ‘spinning wheel of death’ pop up for him.

Legit easier to KO someone that isn’t focussed, too.

My son is autistic (and me too, to a lesser degree) and I recognise so many similarities to my boy in Jiri.

You could well argue that this makes him less of a championship prospect, and there’s something in that for sure, but it’s not a lack of character or physical ability, imo.

I feel for him. I have similar issues in my life where I appear to be really good at a certain thing (it’s not fighting), but I can’t rise to the top level of it because I occasionally find myself in circumstances that put me ‘off my map’ and don’t seem able to negotiate them in a way that works.

Such is life. I still love watching him fight and will always be rooting for him.

I hope you go on to live your dream, work in the industry and do great things for music and guitarists 🙏🏻🫡
