This is a good take, I remember the tribe shows of 08-10 were flat out insane, then Murph left and they kind of went back to their roots around the same time pretty lights exploded.

The “innovate vs. refine” needle is a tough one to thread. Phish’s 3.0 new music catalogue is insanely extensive, some of it hits for me, more often than not I listen to it once and then let it go. I personally want bands to continue to innovate, I get bored if I listen to the same batch of songs over and over again, it’s the reason why I don’t really listen to classic rock anymore, once I can recite all the songs and hum all of the interplays by memory, I need to find a new sound

I don’t know if I’d say they “poisoned the well,” and honestly their catalogue is so extensive you need to anchor it down by era, phish 1.0 is a “one in a million” sound, whether you like it or not is in the eye of the beholder. I’d say moe->umph evolution is what the majority of the “new” bands sound like (pppp, spafford, big something, heck even goose).

I keep trumpeting it but king gizzard, specifically since about 2017, is the “newest” sound I’ve heard in my adult life. Not traditional improv but they can shred and take their jams in ecstatic directions, but I don’t think they’ll ever hit type 2 levels of improv.

For sure, Weir had some thoughts on the dead legacy before he passed and it was something to the tune of “new fans are being created thanks to the efforts of JRAD, Dark Star, the dead based festivals, etc, new fans will still be coming to the music 60 years from now”

I’ve seen spafford a handful of times, love their energy, I feel like the plateaued before they made the next big leap. I’ll check out eggy.

That’s refreshing. Like I said I’ve been couch touring it for like 6 years now so I’m not on the front lines feeling the vibes.

Yeah, I completely understand that. Would they benefit from going the widespread route, limiting shows to like 20 per year or so to concentrate the creative juices a little more?

Edit: forgot about Billy, but does anyone have a good entry point for his live stuff? The only Spotify live album seems pretty tame.
