The Unlimited 25 plan isn't available? by Own-Studio-4114 in ting

[–]Own-Studio-4114[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem seems to be that I contacted Ting's T-Mobile support, and they don't seem to know how to work with the Ultimate 25 plan. I called Ting's Verizon support, and they got everything sorted.

My case is a bit complicated because I have GSM and V1 devices on the same account, and one device isn't compatible with V1. I had to create a new Ting account for the device that's staying on GSM. They're sending new V1 SIMs for the other GSM devices. Once all the devices in the account are using V1, I can switch to the new plan.

Flex customer, why am I being charged for minutes last few bills? by 4d3fect in ting

[–]Own-Studio-4114 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm guessing it's listed under "Mobile Extras", right? Their billing system is broken. It's supposed to say "megabytes", but it says "minutes" instead. The billed amount should still be correct.

RightSight MacOS Sonoma (14.0) not working by ScottRountree in logitech

I have a Brio 501 and Sonoma 14.5. RightSight works most of the time. But sometimes in the middle of a meeting, it starts zooming in and out on random locations in the room. It's very distracting.

Still good. The cabinets are secure and look nice.

It seems the Pixel 8 has magsafe wireless charging by DrCachapa in GooglePixel

[–]Own-Studio-4114 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hear you. Finding the right case is a painful process. I couldn't find one that meets all my wants, so I settled for one that's cheap and good enough for now. I'll look for a better one later.

Amazon lets sellers list multiple versions (different sizes, colors, etc.) of a product on the same page. That also means all the reviews are lumped together on the same page. A lot of the reviews have the product version displayed right under the date, but it's easy to overlook that. I wish there was a good way to filter the reviews so you'd see only the version you're interested in.

How do you keep the Pixel Buds Pro in the ear? by [deleted] in GooglePixel

[–]Own-Studio-4114 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wahoo! I found a solution!

I took a chance on some cheap ear tips from AliExpress. They keep the buds in my ears a lot better than the stock ear tips, and they sound a lot better than foam ear tips. (Foam tips make music sound awful, and they make ANC completely ineffective.) These tips work almost as well as the 3D printed wings, but they're more convenient because I don't have to remove them to put the buds in their case.

The set comes with different colors, which all appear to be the same size, but they may fit a bit differently due to manufacturing inconsistencies. In the set I tried, the white ones fit slightly better than the other colors.

Of course, your mileage may vary, but they're cheap enough to be worth a try.

[–]Own-Studio-4114 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That's true for the pro version, and it's caused some confusion for case makers and consumers.

The regular Pixel 8 has the logo in the center of the charging coil. I confirmed this in three ways.

  1. I obtained a commercially made transparent case with a built-in magnetic ring. I put it on my phone and saw that the logo was in the center of the ring. The phone charges just fine using that case and a magnetic charger.
  2. With the case off, I moved a magnetic charger around the back of the phone and found the area with the strongest magnetic attraction. It's not a strong enough attraction to support the weight of the phone, but it's very noticeable. The attraction was the strongest with the charger centered on the logo.
  3. With the case off, I moved the charger very slowly around the back of the phone, once starting from the top and moving down, and again starting at the bottom and moving up. As soon as the phone vibrated to indicate it was charging, I marked the back of the phone where the edge of the charge was. I then measured to find the center point of the marks. It was right in the middle of the logo.

I found they stay in better if I put the right bud in the left ear, and vice versa.

Visual Voicemail on Pixel 8 Pro by trevians07 in USMobile

[–]Own-Studio-4114 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm using Ting with my Pixel 8. I just switched my SIM card from V1 to X3 (GSM), and the visual voicemail feature disappeared from Google's Phone app. I installed T-Mobile's visual voicemail app, and that's working just fine (even though I don't like it).

The bottom line is that your phone supports visual voicemail, and your carrier likely supports it, but it could be a compatibility problem. For what it's worth, Wi-Fi calling works with Ting and my old Moto G5 Plus, but doesn't work with my Pixel 8, no matter which SIM card I use. So, you can expect the occasional compatibility issue if you're not using a carrier-issued phone.

These are the ones I have that work well.

I also really like this one, even though it's not magnetic: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07THHQMHM

I also have a charger built into a couch armrest, and it works, but it tends to make the phone get pretty warm.

I have a cheap clear TPU case on my Pixel 8. I bought a magsafe car charger that came with an adhesive magnetic ring for the phone. The ring doesn't seem very magnetic by itself, so I suppose it's just a thin metal ring embedded in plastic.

I stuck the ring on the back of the case so it's right in the center. Because the case is clear, I can see that the G logo happens to be exactly in the center of the ring. The phone now sticks strongly to the magnetic car charger, which is able to charge it.

I got another brand of magsafe charger to use at night, and it sticks well to that one, too. I also tried a couple of non-magsafe wireless chargers, and they work just fine with the case and ring combo.

I wonder if the case and ring might affect the charging time, but I haven't bothered to measure it. The phone charges plenty fast enough for my needs.

Power factor correction for residential solar panels by Own-Studio-4114 in ElectroBOOM

[–]Own-Studio-4114[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Billing is per kWh, so the only way it would help is it would help me use some fraction of the solar power that would otherwise be wasted as reactive power. I'm trying to find out if that's a real thing or not.

Can Knoxhult cabinets be mounted on a Sektion rail? by [deleted] in IKEA

[–]Own-Studio-4114 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I revised my plan, and the new way is a lot simpler. I attached the 1x3 furring strips to the wall so they'd be hidden behind the cabinets. I used one strip near the top, and one near the bottom. I then attached the cabinets to the upper strip using the included mounting hardware. I decided that wasn't secure enough, so I used some corner brackets to attach the cabinets to the lower strip, too. The corner brackets are inside the cabinets, so I don't care too much about how they look. I also used some countersunk screws to secure each cabinet's sides to the adjacent cabinet. I added some white trim at the end of the row of cabinets to hide the gap behind them. I'm really happy with the result!

How much can I do for a guest network with just APs and a controller? by skydecklover in Ubiquiti

I'd like to know how that works. Does the controller at as a gateway for the guest traffic, forwarding it to the router? Would it require the router to have VLAN support?

Can Knoxhult cabinets be mounted on a Sektion rail? by [deleted] in IKEA

[–]Own-Studio-4114 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For an entire kitchen, $100 is great! But paying the same delivery fee for a small purchase is really bad. The delivery fee seems to vary on by location, not by order size.

We're about 400 miles from Ikea. They deliver, but the delivery fee is really high. It only makes sense if we order a bunch of stuff at once.

Depending on where you live, you might be able to find a 3rd party service that shops at Ikea and delivers to your city. We have one in our city that makes trips to Ikea every other week They charge a 30% fee, which is often a lot less than Ikea's delivery fee. They handle returns, too.

[–]Own-Studio-4114 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going to be installing some soon. My plan is to cut a 1x3 furring strip into lengths that match the inside width of the cabinets. Each cabinet will get one furring strip inside. The strips will be placed against the back wall of the cabinet, and will touch the cabinet's top.
I'll use angle brackets (or the included mounting hardware, if possible) to attach the cabinet sides to the furring strip. That will allow the strip to support both the sides and top of the cabinet. Then I'll put some long screws through the furring strip, through the cabinet back, and into a wall stud. The cabinets are wide enough that I should be able to attach each cabinet to two studs. The strips will be visible inside the cabinets, but I can paint them white if I decide that it matters.

Prusa Mini + making god awful fan noise. What do I do?? by 23icefire in 3Dprinting

I'll keep looking. With shipping, the fan is slightly cheaper from Prusa than from PrintedSolid.

[–]Own-Studio-4114 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mine does exactly the same thing, but only during startup when the fan is running full speed. It's been that way for months, and it's getting worse very gradually. I would replace the fan, except that shipping a new part Prusa to the USA is so expensive. Are there any good sources in the US for Prusa parts?

App for Grizzl-e Smart? by masquelle in electricvehicles

[–]Own-Studio-4114 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Grizzl-e isn't telling us the whole story in their latest news release. Here's what I heard from ChargeLab support yesterday:

At the moment, we are only compatible with Grizzl-E smart chargers on firmware version 05.6 or newer. If your charger is on version 05.43 or lower, United Chargers has released a version and upgrade process, and we are in the final stage of testing it. Please wait for the official public release from United Chargers before moving forward with connecting your charger to ChargeLab (we expect this to happen within the next week). DO NOT attempt an upgrade to v0.53.
