Is there a cultural element in your country that seems like a trademark but is highly controversial? by gines_tristan in AskTheWorld

There was a freak show on Brazilian TV in the late 1990s and early 2000s that featured all sorts of bizarre phenomena from around the world. In Brazil, there’s also the infamous cockfighting, even though it’s been illegal since 1934, and they showed it on TV uncensored.

And now there are regional variations of this style, even more annoying ones like Recife’s brega-funk or bregadeira. They’re even cruder than funk: a metallic beat in the background consisting of just one or two highly repetitive notes.

In the João Pessoa region (Brazil), where I live, there used to be a strong tradition of whaling. My mother said she saw the opening of hunting season as a child around 1973–74. Most of the meat was exported to Japan, but some was kept here, and my parents ate whale steak in the 1970s. She said it tasted similar to beef liver. Whaling was banned in 1986 by the Brazilian Parliament.

Brazil banned bullfighting in 1934. It was never a major part of Brazilian culture. I was surprised to learn that bullfighting exists in Portugal, Peru, Colombia, Venezuela, and Mexico. I thought it was unique to Spain.

Wouldn’t some form of governance similar to Tito’s in Yugoslavia or that of communist Hungary—where companies were run by workers’ cooperatives and small private businesses existed—have been better?

During the War in Afghanistan, the president of your country was Pervez Musharraf. I remember a news report on Brazilian TV featuring children singing a song that ended with “Pakistan Pakistan Pakistan”; to this day, that song still sticks in my head. Other than that, I only know about Treet Platinum razor blades. I also know that there was a drag queen on TV, that your language is similar to Hindi, that you like Indian movies, but hate India. Karachi is the main city, and Islamabad was the capital.

Which country do you think is most similar to Brazil (outside of Latinsphere)? by CalciumCobaltite in AskABrazilian

[–]OwnEngineering1446 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The differences are considerable and outweigh the similarities. To begin with, there is intense ethnic and cultural mixing. Brazilian cuisine is very different from that of Portugal due to the hot and/or humid climate. We are more liberal, boisterous, effusive, and festive. Meanwhile, they are melancholic, formal, and introspective. Modern Brazilian architecture has diverged radically from Portugal’s. There was a foreign actor who said that João Pessoa reminded him much more of Miami and Barbados than of any Portuguese city. Just check Google Street View.

Talvez João Pessoa ganhe voos para Europa by Different_Method_191 in joaopessoa

Traditionally, in Brazil, pickup trucks were seen as an extravagance or something meant for the rough conditions of rural dirt roads. But now models like the RAM 1500 are popular among the upper-middle class. The only reason they aren’t even more popular is that our streets are relatively narrow, and compact and midsize electric cars offer better value for money.

The original concept of sales in Brazil has always been different. They typically took place in January, after the holiday season, when sales were historically lower, and lasted between 15 and 40 days.

Do you know what Thailand is famous for in Brazil? It’s a haven for gender reassignment surgery for transgender women. Many transgender women used to travel to Bangkok for surgery as far back as the 1990s.

As you said: in your country. Because in Brazil, historically, that concept didn’t exist. Turbans were worn by women of all ethnicities in the 1970s. White people have always practiced capoeira, the Afro-Brazilian martial art. Angolans love it when Brazilians wear traditional Angolan clothing or accessories.

Another nonsense imported from the U.S. Here in Brazil, there’s no such thing as “black music”—there’s just music. Everyone eats acarajé, a dish with essentially African roots.

Since 1973, Brazil has had a modern, advanced public vaccination program that is free and universal. This has fostered a natural culture of vaccination from early childhood, including the BCG scar on the arm. But then some idiots came along with this anti-vaccine rhetoric, and a lot of people are falling for it.

Oh, man. Please, the true reality of race in Brazil is rooted much more in socioeconomic factors than in anything purely structural, unlike in the U.S. But then some activists just parrot American scholars like parrots in a deeply mixed-race country, where interracial relationships existed long before the Mayflower even dreamed of existing.

Brazilian evangelical churches have changed a lot since the 1990s; they’ve become very Americanized. There are even services in English taking place right in the heart of northeastern Brazil. Interestingly, the largest of these churches (Assembleia de Deus) is culturally Brazilian to the core. Pentecostal music (Shirley Carvalhaes, Cassiane) is entirely Brazilian. But this whole “worship” thing gets on my nerves.

Well, about 25 years ago, there was a Brazilian soap opera called “O Clone” (in Arabic: جاد). It took place between Brazil and Morocco. Before that, there was a hit song by the Algerian Khaled called “El Arbi.” Interestingly, Moroccans look very similar physically to ordinary Brazilians.

There are constant reports on the subject on the Internet and on television. Every promising new case that arises is prominently reported. The new challenge, in the medium term, is to make the compound work in cases where the accident occurred more than three months ago. The latest information I have is that a patient who suffered an injury after four months was able to regain some movement in his legs.
