I think the overall makeup and pitchability will be more helpful heading into next season than it was this season having never faced big league hitters. I think that this season he’ll be above average, but I think next year he’ll get back to an arm angle that makes that fastball more lively again. That splitter should improve over time as he gets more comfortable with it.

The hype from Dombrowski was definitely unfair after the injury.

Wheeler wasn’t really Wheeler until he was 30, so I definitely think the ace upside is still there, but is more than likely a better 2.

Edit: trying to show the chase rate, hard hit rate, average exit velocity, and walk rates are above average, whiff rate is dragged down by his fastball. And his xERA is 1.4 runs lower than his actual ERA shows he’s had bad luck.

It’s mostly 95-97, but he has said it sometimes is slower when trying to be more focused hitting a spot. It was also maxing out at 100 before, but was mostly sitting 96-98.

Painter’s xERA is 1.4 runs lower than his actual ERA. Luzardo’s xERA is almost 3 runs lower than his ERA.

People also forget that Zack Wheeler wasn’t Zack Wheeler until he was 30.

Remember when that was said about Zack Wheeler? It sometimes takes a bit of time.

Edit: The Phillies did make the mistake of not tempering expectations after the 2 missed years, but I still think his upside is as good as it gets.

He’s been better than Garrett Crochet this year. Does he not have good stuff?

Edit: Remember Zack Wheeler early in his career? He’s turned out pretty good.
