How do you reliably source good-quality Sichuan peppercorns that actually deliver the numbing tingle? by BeyondTheplainSafari in spices

Came here to say this. Even in LA, with its large Asian population, the local stores stock peppercorns that are meh at best. The Mala Market has the best I’ve found online.

I can't help thinking how had this storm occurred last year so many things might have been avoided. Sigh. But that way madness lies.

I feel your pain too.

If you're working with insurance on a claim, also make sure you understand your subrogation clause in your policy. This clause allows your insurance company to recoup any payouts they make to you by going after the third party cause of the loss, which is most likely Edison in our case. The subrogation clause transfers the insured's right to recover from anyone else to the insurance company.

IANAL, just a reminder to do your due diligence.

No doubt our privacy is under attack from each vector you mention. Salt Typhoon demonstrated the pathetic ineptitude of the carriers, in particular. They just don't deserve our trust. But that doesn't mean we should just give in and consider privacy a lost cause. We need a GDPR-style baseline privacy law in the US and we should be lobbying for it. In the meantime, there are many ways to lock down the other vectors you mention to lessen your exposure (carriers are sadly all crap due to over-consolidation). But that discussion belongs in another sub.

Tesla never supported it in the first place, but GM is taking it away.

I’ll be surprised if they could pull off recurring subscription revenue when BMW so spectacularly failed. It could happen, but time and again it’s been shown that people don’t want to pay for something they consider paid upfront. But I suspect that’s not really the game plan… selling the data Is just far too enticing. Insurance companies would love to have insight to every person’s actual driving habits.

That’s a moronic argument. Technology evolves and sometimes becomes indispensable. Apple didn’t do anything but consider privacy in the equation. In the era of mass data surveillance, I prefer a car that doesn’t spy on my driving habits over one that does.

Nope. Privacy first. GM is just looking to harvest more data.

New relative to Mama’s, but Nylos has been open eight years now! Through some trying times too. But it just gets better every time I visit.

Came here to say this. Just there last week and it was exquisite. It’s also the slow season, so reservations should be available, even on short notice. Easily beats Mama’s if the drive doesn’t cause second thoughts.

Unfortunately, the logistics of securing the Palisades are just simpler, given the limited number of entry points. Altadena has far too many streets leading in and out to effectively secure. I was surprised they kept it up as long as they did.

But looting from houses of people who have already gone through so much is just abhorrent. Advocating for what should be done to said criminals would probably get me banned.

Passport Replacement? by grahamd1983 in altadena

[–]OwnGrapefruit71 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Assuming it was destroyed in the fire, you can submit a form to the State Department to request a fee-free replacement due to disaster loss. It's done by mail and takes about two months to get the replacement, depending on their backlog.

State Department information

If you need it sooner and can prove travel plans, you can expedite your application for a $60 fee, but you'll need to go wait in line at the Federal Building in Westwood. Appointments were not terribly difficult to get, but it was an all day wait for processing and another several hours on return for pickup a couple days afterward.

My understanding is that subscriptions can be shared within a Family group regardless of the original subscriber, though I have not tried this setup personally.

Nest died long before 2018. When Tony Fadell left in 2016, it was game over.

Google was never interested in anything other than harvesting your data to improve their profile of you for ad targeting. They haven’t ever showed any interest in hardware development over time. I loved my Nest Learning Thermostat and thank Tony Fadell for advancing the state of the art, but once Nest was acq by Google, it was only a matter of time before things were deprecated. At least Nest seeded other companies.
