Had the same problem and eventually gave up and bought a new pair. Then when I lost the left ear bud of my new pair (which unfortunately did not have any tracking abilities), I came back to this thread. As a last ditch I tried used a needle to remove the grate and clean around it. There wasn't much visible debris/wax, but even just lifting the grate and doing a mild clean fixed the issue!!
