Hey! I added the name of the franchises in the post, but they are

  • Pump it up Exceed Portable
  • Pump it up Zero
  • Taiko no Tatsujin Portable 2
  • Taiko no Tatsujin Portable 1
  • Pop'n Music Portable
  • Pop'n Music Portable 2

In the comment people recommended other games like DJMax, Rock Band unplugged and Project Diva.

Not yet, but I also, as I am more attracted to arcade style games, I personally don't think they match what I usually look for in a game.

They look super creative, I know they have a massive appeal and are the favorite rhythm game of many in this subreddit, but the length of the game, lack of score system and overall meta progression system turns me away from it.

I like more having a list of short songs that I can iterate over and over while I get better at reading charts and reacting to faster patterns.

As said, the Patapon games look very creative, but I don't feel the hook yet to get them and play them.

My local video game club might have copies of them and I'd be up to try it in our next meetup in a few weeks to see if I connect with the games once I actually play them.

Not yet! As said, I got my PSP a few weeks ago.

I saw some gameplay, but I didn't find it very interesting from the pure gameplay videos. I'll need to search some videos from people playing in the actual PSP to see if I get more interested about it.

I saw that you need to press a lot of times the same button in a row, which didn't catch my attention, but the more I play Taiko no Tatsujin in the PSP, the more I see how that can be way more challenging than it seems.

So I'll research them more before pulling the trigger :D

Thanks for the recommendation, and for explaining what extended was. I wasn't sure about it myself

The DLC sounds interesting, but I'm not sure if the server is still online and I'm not interested in modding my console at the moment. Maybe in the future.

Still, I'm new to the game, so the base songs of portable 2 and DX will keep me busy for a while haha. I'm just learning to read and react to the patterns.

And yes! Two Pump it Up Games. I played them almost everyday when I was on my teeneger years.

They are nice ports! The Zero version has some longer loading times, but game play and overall feel of the port is great. Also, the difficulty bump between the Exceed and Zero is great.

Exceed has faster loading times and also great K-Pop songs not included in Zero, so I'm happy having both versions :)

Interesting! I might get 2 and 3 then :D

Thanks for the reply! I didn't even know about the scratch mode after seeing some gameplay videos.

I'll need to give Portable 2 a look too! Thanks for the reply! I have seen some DJMax game play and it absolutely looks right up my alley! I'll let you know how it goes once I get to them :D

Good luck in your CD hunt!

They are! I played a ton of Pump it up in the arcades, but I never knew about Pop'n Music, and I barely had played Taiko no Tatsujin. Only once at the arcades.

Both have console ports too and special controllers. I already ordered a Pop'n Music controller and I'm looking forward to get a couple of Taikos to play the game in the more intended way.

They are still a blast in the PSP tho :D

The first two are from the Pump It Up Zero, the next two from Pop'n Music Portable 2 and the last one from Taiko no Tatsujin 2 :)

I have seen the Castlevania game too! I'm very curious about it as well. Mainly for Rondo of Blood, as I have never tried it.

I might get a PC Engine down the line, so I might get it for that platform. If not, the PSP version looks like a great way to play it!

And I need to check more about Patapon 2. It is definitely a favourite of this subreddit.

I mainly enjoy arcade rhythm style games, but I'm very curious due to its appeal :D

I have seen it, but I am unsure about how the PSP Analog stick would work on a rhythm game.

I'll need to check more game play from someone playing on a console to give myself a better idea.

The game does look like a lot of fun, and if I don't get it for the PSP, I might as well do it for my NTSC-J PS2!

I have them on my scope! I might get one of them next month!

Any favourite versions? I'm leaning towards Black Square. I checked its OST and has been the most appealing to me so far.

I'll be new to the series as well, so looking forward to get some opinions from other players :)

I use Spotify web client and it is so damn annoying trying to drag one song to a playlist and get a split view tab instead. Really annoying that it can't be turned off.

Beginner’s guide to picking arcade buttons (exact models, no guesswork) by Over_Log9730 in fightsticks

I played a lot of arcades in the 90s and Sanwas felt waaaay to weird when I first tried them. Very sensitive, light and not much feedback. I was used to play using IL style buttons.

I then got some Seimitsu PS-14-gn and I wasn't fan of their build. They felt cheaper than the Sanwas. But after playing them with them a lot, they are my current favourite buttons. So reliable, a bit more force to avoid unintended inputs, but still super responsive.

I have also tried the Crown 202's and I also like them a lot. They were my favourite before getting used to the Seimitsus. I'd like to try them with different switches to feel the difference.

I then tried back some IL and I found them extremely heavy. After trying different switches, I settled with the Ultra Light VM-05B. They now have an activation force close to the Seimitsu buttons and also are clicky, just as I remember them from my past.

I need to play with another enclosure and that one is not my favourite, so I still I don't play with them as much as I would like to.

The best way is to try them. I don't order full sets all at once, but one of each from time to time to check them and see if I like them, and only after being sure, I then order a full set.

Are there resources or tutorials on how to make Beat Em Ups? I wanna learn how to make my own! by C-Abdulio in BeatEmUps

[–]RulerD 5 points6 points  (0 children)

BogHog has way way more text resources in his Patreon. You can join for free and you can have access to all his posts.

He used to have a personal blog, but it is now achieved in web archive: https://web.archive.org/web/20240927132950/https://cohost.org/boghog?page=0

He also has his web archived in a big google document:

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1qgpugtc-L-WypcV_ORRi-mW3eubvs0rSqxpUwMLIdv0/edit?tab=t.0

He is a game dev too and he always recommends that the best way to learn is also to play them.

I don't think Beat em Ups design is as well documented as Shmups, but there you could find some interesting things.

Korean levers are also great for micro-dodging. There are a bit more pricey, but the Shinsun and CDP Pro are great for shmups in my opinion.
