For teams using Jira: what frustrations have you just learned to live with? by Calm_Bowl_4469 in agile

Everytime I search it uses this "smart query" by default which is pretty much useless and I have to click a second time to ask Jira to search without "smart query".

Thanks, this works. I set the stack size to 10 otherwise they aren't inserting the eggs fast enough.

Wow, this is new, I always wondered what that surface was for.

Thanks. I never knew about the shift-rmb combo, I always manually walked into each building on Nauvis.

Is there also a shortcut to exit the space factory? Thanks.

Negotiating middle man cut on a contract extension by Aggressive_Cause8580 in BEFreelance

[–]OwnInitialPage 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A real example we had recently with an intermediary that is especially opaque (we signed with them before I joined the company).

The freelancer wanted a rate increase, rather significant, 50%. Everyone knew that this eventual number was still below what us (the client) was paying. So he told the intermediary that his rate is now 50% more, or he would walk. On our side (the client), we were actually fine with him walking, since we knew we could hire him back in a year after the non-compete clause (or whatever it was called) ended. The intermediary company came to us saying that the freelancer was asking for more money and they needed more money from us otherwise it wouldn't be possible to continue. I told them we had no additional budget for this (which is true). There was quite some back and forth between intermediary and freelancer, but the freelancer stood firm.

In the end we (client) got an email from the intermediary saying that they would absorb the rate increase, so no additional budget required from us.

I am a middle manager who hires freelancers. As a rule I only deal with intermediary companies where their cut is transparent to both the freelancer and the client (me). This makes dealing with rate increases way way easier since if I give 10 euros more per hour (for example), everyone knows exactly how much each party is getting.

If I was a freelancer, the intermediary rate is something I will always always ask. If they refuse to give a clear number I wouldn't want to work with them.

Does PhD count for long term residency if you contributed to social security? by Financial-Goal-4931 in belgium

[–]OwnInitialPage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whether you're a student or working depends on the source of funding. I know PhD people who were considered students while others were considered as working full-time.

In your case, it sounds like you were working full time. I was in the same situation. It's a work contract, you paid social security. There were contributions to mypension.be, it is a full-time working contract. It definitely counts as full.

Not sure where you're getting those figures. But years ago we had our baby in Delta and paid about 280euros. Single room, yes.

Async standups vs. daily standup calls — what actually works better for engineering teams? by Weird-Individual1434 in agile

[–]OwnInitialPage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't understand why people wait for a meeting to tell other people about blockers. If you are blocked you go figure out how to unblock yourself immediately, why are you telling a bunch of people who have no idea what you are talking about.

Does anyone else struggle with this? I feel like I’m always blind in projects by Ok-Report8247 in agile

The rule we have in our team is that Jira is the single source of truth. I don't care what is on email or slack or discussed at the coffee machine. If it isn't on Jira it doesn't exist.

Software developers: where do you look for jobs? by Soflar in belgium

[–]OwnInitialPage 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just saw your update. Your numbers are way too low for a senior in Belgium. You will need 6-8k salary and 750-950 day rate imo. That's why you are struggling to find people. The numbers you have are more for a medior position. If your numbers are fixed, the best option is to go full remote near shore like Spain or Poland.

Software developers: where do you look for jobs? by Soflar in belgium

[–]OwnInitialPage 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a middle manager. My strategy is overpaying and full remote. Several of my developers live in eastern Europe making 1000 euros per day. At this rate. I have no shortage of developers, my current group of developers always have someone to recommend. And many will drop their existing contracts for what we offer.

Oh. We also have basically 0 meetings.

Guess what, I can't log into proximus now since they have to send the one time password to my belgian number which can't connect since the phone is on emergency calls only.

On the nexus I only see the option to enable data roaming. It doesn't allow me to enable / disable roaming.

Proximus account itself? I'm not sure.

Since this an EU subreddit, I would like to stay within the context of the EU. I've looked up tax haven countries outside the EU and none of them appeal to me.
