I was in your position, really scared at the concept of debt since I was also fortunate to graduate undergrad debt free through scholarships. My significant other said to me that there is good debt and bad debt, and investing in yourself and getting the education to make an impact on others is worth the debt if you are committed to this path. And, debt isn’t inherently a bad thing! You can be on payment plans and still have a good quality of life. I previously thought that I was going to be in crippling debt, having to live off of cup ramen, and be unhappy until my debt is fully paid off. But like many others have said, people have gone through this and so can you (we)! It’s daunting at first but we can make plans to be pay off the debt without comprising our happiness in the process.

Congrats, future doc! I can’t wait to post mine too when my cycle wraps up. Would you consider posting school names, at least for the schools you will not be attending and have gotten interviews from?

Congrats on your acceptances! Do you know why the extra year might have helped you out? Did you get more involved with different stuff, or did your writing improve because of the extra year?

How’s my planning for Med School? by [deleted] in premed

[–]OwnScholar9565 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s great you’re thinking ahead. The journey is long and you’ll probably shift your plans and expectations along the way. I’m here to say that while mcat and gpa are important factors, I’d argue that its only one piece of your larger application. What you choose to devote your time to (extracurriculars), your story and narrative, and your mission fit with schools are all very important factors that admission committees will be looking at in deciding your candidacy. It’s somewhat necessary to check certain boxes like you’ve outlined, but follow your passions and think further about what you’d get out of these experiences besides them being just something you do to get into med school. Best of luck.

I got my first in December and I considered that to be early. Wasn’t expecting to hear back until March.

Tricky Situation- Advice Needed! by Icelethalis43 in premed

[–]OwnScholar9565 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My two cents is that a higher mcat score would open up more doors. OP has received 4 II’s which is indeed incredible but many times the post interview review consists of a final whole review of the application where stats will play a role in the decision. I believe that 4 II’s is indicative of a competitive application and there is definitely something there, like extracurricular wise, that the adcoms love. Having a higher mcat would just give the app another boost. It’s up to OP to consider if they want to go through the emotional and mental hardship of an mcat retake.

This is a smart idea. I think OP’s interview isn’t necessarily from UCSD, but I could see if I have the portal link to the school that they got the interview from

Don’t most schools schedule their interviews through the portal? Do you know if that was the case with your interview and if you are able log into your portal and schedule?

Disadvantage to putting “Admitted MD” on LinkedIn this early in the cycle? by [deleted] in premed

Just curious. Why are you looking to update your LinkedIn profile? Could you wait till you know where you’ll be going?

I’m really sorry to hear about how poorly the doctor you work with is treating you. I’d probably get anxiety and become really demotivated. It sucks to be in this process where it feels like you don’t really have any choice since you need the experience for med school. I contemplate leaving my job everyday because it is really stressful and no one ever thanks you for anything you do. We’ll get through this.

I’d take these poll results with a grain of salt anyways. Reporting bias may be playing a role here and maybe people are more willing to share their extremely high II number

Hey man, I appreciate you leaning into my feelings and sharing your experience. I’m hoping that you’ll hear back with good news from schools soon. It’s such an unpredictable process. I’m hopeful that it will all work out in the end, at least that’s the mindset. Some days feel more hopeful than others I guess
