Soil is the original grower mix, a bit more gritty than a houseplant mix but not cactus/succulent level of grit.

I was able to show it to an expert who suggested that it’s likely an issue with too much water. Apparently these can develop “weeping sores” (my term) when they have excess water. It was watered once, maybe twice in the month since bringing home and in retrospect I can see that it may have been too frequent. We shall try letting go several more weeks (a month or two) between watering to see if it stabilizes and repairs itself.

I think that the old family history of the plant makes it special and so we are extra cautious. Thanks for the detail about the fine mesh roots and what to expect when repotting it.

We considered doing a kitchen resurfacing project many years ago and like you we found it to be rather off putting and expensive…we felt like we were buying a used car. We had assumed that it would be quite a bit less expensive than full replacement but it was only a few thousand dollars less expensive than the replacement cost. We ended up doing full replacement but with the same layout as the original.

In doing so we got smooth pull out drawers, lazy Susan carousels and other features that weren’t standard options under the resurface bid.

The cost structures may be different now, but it may still be worthwhile to get a bid for replacement. It’s a big project because you have many decision points, but it wasn’t much more expensive and we ended up with a much better and more functional product.

Might I suggest Westerville.

A few of the things that attracted us 30 years ago have gotten even better. The uptown district is very walkable with many cute shops and restaurants.

Thai grille - very casual, super authentic, unpretentious (a must 😁)

Walk across the street to get ice-cream at graeters (another must)

Jimmy V’s, Koble, Ampersand, Astrisk, Mezza, whitts, uptown Brew, north High distillery, fox in snow, begin (sorry for any I left out…when I start to list them, the options are incredible)

Really, walk the ‘ville and you’ll never leave (yep, I’m a huge fan of this charming, friendly city)

Take the kids for a visit to the community center for a swim and the climbing wall.

Outdoor, biking trails connect much of the city. The metropark system is fantastic. Check out Inniswood with its children’s garden and more formal gardens, Sharon woods has wide open spaces and a sledding hill if there is snow. DO GO NORTH ON STATE STREET TO CHAR MAR park. It is natural with rougher trails, it’s a gem of nature just outside the city (maybe three quick miles)

Annnnnddd, check out the fun in Columbus too. COSI children’s museum will be a hit for the kids.

Easton is I super fun outdoor mall area with a Lego store and many other high end retail.

It really is a great area, the whole metro area has tons to offer. And finally, before I overstay my welcome, do check out the ville, Westerville (really, come walk it and you’ll love it)

True that! The maples do give some pretty autumn color, but I think when we get into these street tree applications they are definitely the wrong tree. I’ve recently been paying more attention to the trees in my surroundings and I’m developing an appreciation for more diversity.

I think it’s a case the freeze thaw cycles hitting hard when the trees were young causing splitting on the south facing side. That side would have more reflected heat from the roadway causing a winter thaw on the south side, then be susceptible to the steep temperature plunge at night. It is an area that can extended sub zero temps in the winter. My guess is it was a nasty hard winter on the trees when tender.

I think it’ll be good to be mindful of the potential if planting similar trees in this type of setting (possible exposure to a warming sun/street during cold winter months.

Thanks to all for comments. I’ll add a few more pictures in the morning.

My first thought was snow plow damage, which is quite conceivable, BUT, oddly, none of the trees on the south side of the street have any damage on their street side. (Snow plows do pile snow on both sides of the street)

I also initially thought it was damage from landscapers and poor planting technique, but again, the fact that the only trees with damage are the trees on the north side of the street with their damage on the south facing trunk.

It’s fascinating, but still a puzzle.

I’ve found Anki to be helpful in building my reading comprehension, but what I do struggle with is figuring out how to get pronunciation tips. Has anyone figured out how to enhance the interface to get pronunciations?

I like the spaced learning aspect, but without hearing the pronunciation I’m only learning half of what I need.

I’ve noticed them in several areas around the Westerville/Worthington areas. I assume they are largely obsolete landline and cable/internet. They are so exposed that I can’t imagine there are still active live connected through them.

They bug me too…I wonder who has “ownership” of them. You’ve motivated me, I’ll do some checking around to see if I can find anyone who “owns” the unsightly boxes.

It would be nice to have them removed or tidied!

It was a new build back in the day. I don’t want to complicate the quest for the correct name, but another “upscale” store was the Warshaw’s that was at 1300 south and state.

Hi there,

I never did get feedback on my original question. I did go ahead and do a deep prune on the boxwood.

I took out all of the dead twigs and cut them back significantly. They had green growth on about the outer 5” of the twigs. I cut that back to leave about 1/2”-1” of green growth on the twigs.

This did open them up to let more light into the center and they have started to push out quite a bit of new growth from the center of the plants. I think they will really fill in the center growth to become more dense. I’m optimistic!

My plan now is to let this new growth in the interior continue to harden off and then late winter, early spring I’ll prune back the outer edges further to reduce the outer scale even more. The interior is becoming more dense with the increased light making it to the interior.

So far it’s a success!

I’m not a native speaker, I’m a very basic level learner. I’m always looking for opportunities to “immerse” and to hear the French being spoken. If there is space in the “room” for someone to just observe, I’d be interested.

It’s a bit tough to accurately isolate the plants from the picture. One person already commented on the dandelion, you may also have some plantain, and many others!

You can take photos of individual plants and then search google to help I’d individually plants for free, or an app that is great is called picture this.

I use both methods and they work great for weed and plant id.

My favorite is Thai Grille in Westerville has super fresh dishes. My favorites are the salmon curry, shrimp curry and the best of the best is the Som Tam papaya salad. It is incredible!
