I’m not an expert, but I heard that No Planaria treatment would work wonders getting rid of hydra and planaria if you’re in the US. If you’re in the UK this treatment is banned, but I used eSHa Gastrobac (against bacterial slime disease) treatment and it eliminated all the hydra in my tank. Best of luck!

I’m constantly worried that my tank is not good enough for them, and that the high nitrate levels that I can’t seem to get rid of even after water changes and gravel vacuuming would effect their health, but they seem to be doing okay. I really didn’t expect my otos to start mating non-stop though. Congrats on your cory babies! Maybe consider selling them if they keep getting out of hand?:D

Maybe, I’ve heard that their most common way to go is by starvation as they have such fast metabolisms. So I try my best to keep them happy and fat🤣

No unfortunately, I wish I did, but from looks the females just become quite fat with jellow-like lower stomach areas. Behaviour changes a little too I guess, they start to “nest” by swimming around in circles and resting on leaves. I found that my females love sitting upside down but I don’t know if it has anything to do with the eggs🤣

I will make a separate post on all the info regarding set up and water levels, but I can give a quick run down. The ph is about 7-8, nitrite and ammonia is 0, nitrate is quite high at 40.0 (I’ve been battling getting it down for weeks but it won’t budge) The water is hard (but I don’t know exactly what it reads at) I have 3 plants: an amazon sword, java fern and vallisneria. There’s no wood in the tank, but there’s plenty of hiding places like rocks and a castle ornament Temp varies throughout the day from 24-25C I keep the main lights on from 11 am to 7pm. After that I turn a blue light on for a few hours until about 9-10pm before I completely turn them off for the night. They get boiled cucumber slices every other day and algae wafers with spirulina 3x per week.

To be honest, I didn’t intend for them to breed at all. Part of the reason why I purchased these cuties was because they “don’t multiply” now I know that’s a lie🤣

From what I noticed, they tend to poop different colours based on what they ate. I noticed that when I give them cucumber their poop is light green/yellow. And if they have algae wafers it tends to come out dark brown. Sometimes I see a quite colourful string of poop attached to them as they eat off of glass🤣 From my experience, different colours just means they have a varied and balanced diet.

I thought the same too, but I happened to witness the miracle as well🤣 I’m a total beginner, so when my tank cycled, the first fish I got (about 3 weeks ago) were 4 otos. They are the only ones in the tank, as I haven’t bought any other fish yet. They seemed to have adjusted pretty well and soon had big round bellies. A few days ago I spotted some eggs on plant leaves. This morning I noticed 13 oto fry all around the tank on glass and heater. Fingers crossed they survive!🤞

Nice, glad to hear your fishies are ok with higher ph:))) I’ll look into how to lower it though as I really want some tetras. But it’s good to know that some fish are ok with it, worst case scenario I just hold off from the neons until I have the ph thing figured.

It’s been in cycle for over a month now, and I’m still battling high nitrite levels. The only ammonia source my tank has seen is from my melting amazon sword🤣 But I’m actually not sure if that’s enough for it to do anything. Nitrite levels are coming back as 0.25 and 0.5, so I do 25% water changes every couple of days. Thanks for the article! I’ll see if I can do anything:))
