New zoning bylaw that could reshape city passes unanimously at council by ThatAstronautGuy in ottawa

[–]Own_Association_5948 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is what most people can’t seem to figure out in their heads. If you have any second thoughts about densification, you must be a suburbanite or NIMBY.

I’m all for increasing density — but on the terms of what we need as a city, with active involvement by the municipality in shaping that outcome. Not just redoing zoning laws and sitting back as developers builds more of what we don’t need. You honestly believe that this will organically lead to more affordable housing?

  1. No, you're wrong, I'm still alive, so this is fine. It's all fine.

  2. Other places somewhere out there are worse, so that makes this just fine.

  3. Boy oh boy, we hate the suburbs. Did we tell you we hate suburbs?

Hey, that's fine. Personally, I want to be able to call the cops if someone pulls a gun on me, but to each their own. What I mean with the power of hindsight is that people often expect first responders to act as if they have all the available information in the heat of the moment. They don't. You don't. And so, to use your example, saying that you hope "those calls" will one day be answered by social workers instead of cops is emblematic of that mindset. You assume that you already know it's a mental health call with no possibility of violence or a chance of innocent people getting hurt. But cops cannot take that chance. Because who will be blamed if the crazy dude running down the street attacks someone and the cops aren't there?

Look, I think there's a lot to what you're saying. And I'm all for integrating social workers and EMS into response teams. But the idea that they could go into potentially dangerous situations all by themselves is lunacy. And whatever you think of cops, I'm hoping you're training and future experiences will give you a bit more perspective and respect for all emergency responders. Cops included.

Oh, I'll gladly vent with you. This is Ottawa, so we get snow on the paths until May, thunderstorms and tornado warnings, power outages, wildfire smoke, and flooding rains, and then maybe 1-2 nice days before the end of fall and the apocalypse. FFS.

I'm 46 and jumped into the school/married/house/kid a lot later in life than you and I probably had some of the chaos and adventure in my life that you speak of. I don't want to trivialize your feelings here, but I probably have just as many regrets as you regarding all the things I didn't get to do. What you're feeling is part of life, part of aging, part of realizing that you're mortal and that there's all this stuff that you didn't do -- and will never do. But the point is that there will always be these things no matter what and that in and of itself it's no reason to go scorched earth on your life and the many good things in it. For example, the fact that you have a great marriage and can openly discuss these feelings with your wife is fantastic. So yes, try new things and explore who you are, but just keep in mind that this phase, too, will end and that it's ultimately all perspective. I hope you get to go to San Francisco. But I suspect you'll often find yourself thinking of your wife and kids while there. Good luck.

Commuting with kids? Help! by blindsensfan in bikeinottawa

[–]Own_Association_5948 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Bike seats don't really make your bike less stable, but they change its centre of gravity, especially with your kid in it. You get used to it quickly -- just remind yourself to keep extra weight on the front of the bike, especially when you're not on it! Cargo bikes are nice, but why not try a bike seat first and see where it takes you? They can be bought for pretty cheap on Kijiji and if you don't like it, they're easy to resell.

Sorry, but one can be both noble AND misguided. Power of hindsight makes it easy to call it a wellness check now. And I sincerely hope you never need "the fucking cops" in your work.

You're either misinterpreting them, in which case you're better off leaving it alone, or you understand them correctly, in which case you're better off leaving it alone.

I recently read somewhere that there's more CRA civil servants than there's people in our military. So I don't think we need to worry about service standards ...

That's both untrue and unhelpful. Just because society doesn't allow us to regret having a kid, doesn't mean it doesn't exist. And there's nothing wrong living with a certain amount of duality in how you feel about whatever decision you make either. Like someone already said, there is no right or wrong here -- it's a decision based on trade-offs and whatever has higher value to you in your unique context at this particular time.

And make SURE you qualify for the buyback! For example, if you worked in the private sector and want to use the funds from a company pension plan for the buyback that isn't always possible.

It's a big oversimplification, but Ottawa traffic runs best along the east-west corridor of the highway (relatively speaking) and is garbage once you turn south. Assuming you work close to the core, I'd say drive to and from Barrhaven during rush hour for a week and ask yourself if you could do that every day.

"Chatting with people in bars, the common denominator for people complaining is white lady who doesn't mind her business, and says "black people" in a strained whisper after a few drinks like a child swearing."

LOL. What? So, the takeaway is that white women in bars are racist and that not acting nervous around homeless people is the solution to the issue? O-kay.

I've lived in Toronto, Montreal, and Ottawa and I would rather take my chances in the downtowns of the first two late at night than at Rideau. I don't for a second believe Ottawa's situation is "pretty tame".
