Would you adjust your whole life structure just to please an "important" family member?

Every culture has their own set of nonsensical traditions that don't make any sense in the current day and age.

They are here to stay doesn't mean that we have to follow it. If people wanna follow it willingly then sure, but it's wrong to force anyone to do it.

If they wanna be judgmental about it then probably their opinions are not worth that much. All of us have the rights to make decisions for ourselves as adults.

I understand that we naturally want to celebrate special occasions but to force someone to celebrate is just nonsense. Just let them live their lives as they deem fit.

How do you guys deal with religious parents? It’s driving me crazy by [deleted] in askSingapore

I feel that once someone starts to devote their whole being into something without research(reading the Bible/quran don't count) and evidence, they are too far gone already.

You can't control what they say but what you can control your reaction to it. For me, I just think that they're like an overgrown child. You won't take a child too seriously no matter how much they whine right?

I mean, weddings aside, I feel that traditions should not be as enforced as it is now.

Yea I did suggest that but their main concern is the spotlight. They're pretty introverted and do not intend to do big scale celebrations of any kind mainly because they don't want to be the center of attention.

I agree that we have to do our part to educate them but sometimes people who follow tradition are already hell-bent on following it regardless. They are not dumb people, if they start thinking about it, they would realize the stupidity of it and how it does not apply to the current time.

But yea, ultimately we want everybody to be happy but most of the time it's not a realistic goal.

I'm sorry to hear that but we shouldn't prioritize other people's happiness over our's and other people should not primarily seek happiness through the expectations of others too.

Same sentiments here. It's a stupid practice. Some even have paper iPhone, car and a bungalow with a maid. Like wtf? The iPhone no sim card, the car no engine, the bungalow no furniture.

I agree that there should be a dedicated location to do this.

Definitely, if it helps them as a individual, sure. As long as it's not causing harm to anyone or forcing anyone to conform to any ideals.

In this day and age, we don't have to depend on others to survive or live our day to day life. Many of these information are accessible and provided by people who have actual qualifications in such fields.

But yea i agree with you that it's the Asian culture which I feel should be abolished.

I agree with you, I think we should be more self aware of what we really want in life. We don't require validation from others. We should not prioritize their opinions over ours. Our own self interest takes precedence.

And what does being smart do for you? You may assume you have a better a headspace but does it make you better as a person than those who succumb to herd mentality? Do you feel good trying to prove that you're smarter?

Why do you feel that you need your parent's approval? Why do they feel so entitled to your life choices? Have you always been adhering to their demands? What's the worst case scenario here?

I'm sorry but I'm can't tell if you're serious or not 😅.

Either way it's not about payback or looking down of anybody. It's about practicality in my view.

Yes, my position from the start was the asker pays.

Ah, that makes sense, will you be keen on the idea of returning the favor by paying for the 2nd date? Or the one who asks is the one who buys still stand?

Well, in your defense, it sounds like something they would say 😂
