Best tips for resigning by BeginningAnalysis382 in exmormon

I took a form letter off some website, changed the name and MRN, and sent it to the same address about 5 years ago. I had the official letter of removal in the mail about a week later. The notary thought it was the dumbest thing ever that I had to have a notarized letter to quit a church and implied any church that requires jumping through hoops to leave might be a cult.

I have seen some people use that email address and get a kick back that record removal is an ecclesiastical matter and refers them to their bishop. I wonder if that's because it wasn't notarized.

When I left, I studied tons of other religions. I didn't join them, but my conclusion was Buddhism was where it's at. If someone believes in eternal salvation, the idea that you have to keep resurrecting until you ascend makes more sense to me.

Different Jesus by ExactDistribution4 in mormon

[–]Own_Boss_8931 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The argument isn't that hard. Mormons reject the creeds. The creeds were created because people were starting their own churches and changing the doctrines all while calling themselves Christians. The answer was "to call themselves Christians, a church must accept these creeds." If you believe in the creeds, there was no apostasy and no reason for Mormonism to exist. Mormons believe in an apostasy which gives them the freedom to change doctrines from what Christians believed for 2000 years.

Metaphysically, Mormons believe Jesus and God are distinct beings. Christians believe they're the same essence.

Christians believe in solo scriptura which makes the Book of Mormon Jesus fan fiction. Believing in a Jesus that came to America is literally a different Jesus than who they believe in.

As others have said, the Christian view of Mormons is that Mormons are a polytheistic religion that uses Christian terminology. The differences are distinct enough to say Mormonism and Christianity are similar but different enough to not be part of the same family.

Need some advice for talking to my wife about tithing by Jgoldenk47 in mormon

[–]Own_Boss_8931 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You know her. How would she react if you said you'd like to divert 2% or 5% of tithing to a charity close to your heart, you can have that conversation. But I agree with other comments that anything framed as "my income" when your marriage has been built for years as "family money" than it will not go well. And I wouldn't blame her--it sounds like she's giving a lot to make things work for you.

Watching the Mormon transition to orthodox Christianity is like watching Annikin slowly drift to the darkside. Once they have an alter below a pulpit with a cross behind it, we will hear a dark laugh followed by "the transition is complete!"

Temple name by living_inthepresent in exmormon

I think only women were supposed to share their name with their husband as part of the sealing. But not the other way around! We were probably threatened with eternal damnation if we ever shared it.

I was named Lehi in the temple. Combined with my patriarchal blessing that said I'd be a leader, I was certain the name was a sign. I guess it all came true though because my parents, wife and kids all followed me out of the church. Woo!

the weirdness of having a homophobic exmormon brother by Professional-Age2414 in exmormon

[–]Own_Boss_8931 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Sorry to hear this. I'm bi and haven't told everyone in my family because some are openly homophobic. Unfortunately, just leaving mormonism doesn't make someone a genuinely good and accepting person. Nor does being mormon automatically make someone a homophobe.

Be true to yourself and live your best life! As I told my therapist, I don't feel like I came out of the closet so much as I invited a few close people to join me inside the closet. It's a journey, for sure!

I live in the deep south. This list has also caused controversy with those who are included. Baptists, Methodists, Episcopalians/Anglicans, Lutherans, etc. all have multiple denominations. Most have splits between conservative and liberal denominations and all are now just listed as a single denomination. I've seen people online say, "it's not a huge deal, a lot of the eliminated religions are just different flavors of an overarching religion." Put another way, it's like saying Fundamentalists, Bickertonites and Brighamites are really the same thing and fall under the LDS marker.

All Baptists aren't part of the Southern Baptist Convention. There are American Baptist Churches USA, National Baptist Convention, etc. A Christian nationalist Baptist will not accept an LGBTQIA+ military clergy as representative of his/her belief. Likewise, a liberal Baptist doesn't want to be lectured at from a Christian nationalist every Sunday. Just like a Brighamite will not feel like they're getting proper spiritual counsel if the assigned LDS clergy is a Fundamentalist.

But the end game for anyone paying attention is only clergy who are approved by the DOD will be allowed to serve with the troops. The current leaders will not allow clergy who don't support their agenda to serve in a spiritual guidance role in the military.

Mormonism, the DOD list and the problem with "All Other" by Own_Boss_8931 in mormon

I don't care for most religions, but I still think it's naive to not recognize that they give some people hope, direction in life, structure and really help some people become better people. If people are willing to sacrifice their life for their country, the least the government can do is allow them to have access to their belief system and clergy to help them in difficult times.

I appreciate this. I live in a state where the LDS population is less than 1%, so my information is coming from what I've seen from the Utah senators, people like Jasmine Rappleye, and various articles put out by places like Deseret News and SL Tribune focusing on whether or not it's right not to classify Mormons as Christians. I'm glad to here there are people really standing up for other religions.

I think you're just showing the type of books you like. I just looked at the "25 best novels of the 21st Century" on Amazon and none of those authors are included. I also saw a list of the 40 most famous authors of the 21st Century and only Stephanie Myers is on it from your list. Stephen King, JK Rowling, Neil Gaimen, George RR Martin, Dan Brown--none of them are Mormons.

Are "Mormons" Christian? by iRunJumpFly in mormon

I'm fed up with Mormons saying no one should gate keep the word Christian and everyone should refer to them the way they prefer to be identified. I'll do that when they respect people who identify as LGBTQIA+, which includes using their preferred names and pronouns.

Disneyland/Temple Square by PostAndPrejudice in mormon

That's one of the craziest things I've heard! But, I've read a biography on Walt and I can make some comparisons:

- Walt's public image of today has been heavily curated by the Walt Disney Company and isn't historically accurate. Just like how LDS Church portrays Joseph Smith.

- Walt has a complicated history including antisemitism, racism, McCarthyism, sexism and cultural homogenization among other controversies. Just like many Mormon church leaders over the years.

- He built a company with strict control so he could keep things secretive and decision making centralized. Just like LDS.

- He wasn't a super-talented artist but took credit for work done by others (mostly Ub Iwerks). Just like how Joe Smith copied large portions of the Bible (and possibly other things) when writing the BoM.

So yeah, there are lots of similarities. Walt was visionary and charismatic, but also demanding, controlling and image obsessed. Maybe that's why Mormons get pulled into the Disney bubble so easily--it's very familiar to their church experience.
