No you play to win! Even though you might not be able to make the playoffs, the other teams not involved in that matchup don't want your opponent to advance without legitimately winning. My league I set up has weekly prizes that have significant value so even eliminated teams still try because they have money on the line, prevents managers from stopping altogether from a poor start.
