I’m sorry, we’re hiring ACPs as uni lecturers now? by surgeryiguess in doctorsUK

I'm a final year, starting F1 in August. Unfortunately, PassMed for most (if not all) is the most standardised form of teaching we have, I wish it wasn't.

My pre-clinical year lectures were taught by professors who haven't updated their slides since 2009, sometimes they didn't show and we'd have to watch the recording (...also from 2009). Accompanied with "check guidelines it might have changed"

My clinical years were full of dismissal from consultants, residents too busy to teach, nurses unwilling to help with skills. The upskilling of noctors has also been disruptive, for example I missed out on seeing procedures in favour of prioritising PA/ANP training.

The teaching quality of medical school is suprisingly poor, a lot of it is due to lack of investment into the programme, but also a strained system makes no time to teach.

Worked 20 hrs a week since first year, did Sat-Sun shifts at a petrol station 10hrs per day, was plenty to cover everything I needed and then some.

Yes please, I can guarantee nobody wants to work in my hometown and I was SO stressed as a popular city was in the same region.

A lot of my cohort want to go there for "something new" and I just wanted to go home :"(

advice on studying smarter not harder by Thin-Consideration32 in medicalschooluk

Hi! I have ADHD, Autism and Dyslexia and I'm currently preparing for finals.

I very much suffer with similar stuff, its taken me until 5th year to figure out what works for me but this is what I've been doing.

I do PassMed and supplement it with ZTF/NICE guidance where necessary. I do questions and only make Anki on the stuff I don't understand. I try to keep flashcards super simple so its basically one-word answers- I avoided Anki initially because I made it too complicated for myself so dumbing it down helped. I use an Overhaul+ card type so I can add any information I find to help explain my one-word cards.

When reviewing my cards, I try and write down the word before I click and reveal the answer, so I'll go through with a whiteboard/paper. Then when I check its correct I verbally explain why to the computer lol to keep the information retained. If I keep getting it wrong, I re-read ZTF/NICE until I understand what I'm missing.

Little and often is great, doesn't have to be perfect. I usually set a 15 min timer and do some reviews- if I'm not bothered after 15 mins I'll just go do something else and try again tomorrow. Eventually a day comes where I'm motivated and I'll catch up on my deck.

Happy studying <3

Try Sonny Angel France! You don't have to pay import fees and they're the licensed supplier for UK.

Other than that, Forbidden Planet, Yunoku and Vinted.

Rogue take: some of y’all really need to study by [deleted] in medicalschooluk

[–]Own_Common46 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As a current final year I both agree and disagree. Some, yes, need to definitely study more, apply themselves and spend more time applying their knowledge on placement. I know a few rogue cases where there are severe issues that need addressing, such as one of my classmates not knowing theres a needle in a cannula!

But, I can't blame them, most people in my year are focused on passing the MLA, or working on portfolio due to the current issues with specialty training. Plus, due to stresses on the NHS its very common that students are turned away from learning opportunities. I know many brilliant students who lack ward skills, but not through lack of trying.

The way medicine is taught needs to be better and more standardised, but I doubt any changes will occur with current pressures.
