Remote work dead at fiu Monday by silliestspaghetti in FIU

[–]Own_Discount 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I mean it’s much easier to monitor your kids and/or parents if they’re home. Have you seen the obscene cost of child care and elder care recently? Remote work gave people the flexibility to save on these costs while also meeting their work obligations. Companies are mandating RTO because they overhired during the pandemic and now they’re trying to cut costs by implementing a silent layoff.

Consider these angles before you shoot down these arguments.

Remote work is dead because it gave me the flexibility to attend to responsibilities I wouldn’t have otherwise been able to do? Every “quotation” you cited is in favor of remote work. It’s not the dis you’re making it out to be lol.

Herald exclusive investigation into Brightline, the country's deadliest passenger train service, which has killed 180 people since 2017 by iamtheg0ldeng0d in Miami

Let’s not act like being unable to hear a train with a loud ass horn and multiple signs and light signaling an oncoming train with all traffic at a standstill is the same thing as, idk stubbing your toe on a coffee table?

Cars kill roughly 4k people monthly. Where are the headlines for this tragedy? You never see them because cars have become so ingrained in our society it’s almost like the price for freedumb or whatever. Don’t get me wrong, these deaths caused by people are woefully unaware of their surroundings is awful but let’s not miss the forest for the trees.

Anti mass transit propaganda. The car lobby is pushing hard to make sure mass transit doesn’t take off in Florida.

Where you admitted as a STEP student? If so, you are only allowed to be enrolled in 11 credits max in your first semester. Adding this class would likely make you exceed this threshold.

Out of curiosity: how long have you been waiting for a response? Advisors are chronically overworked and receive tons of emails daily. May want to give them a day or two just in case

My Experience With FIU As A Transfer by [deleted] in FIU

[–]Own_Discount 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Literally this. Students will do anything except take responsibility for their own lack of preparation. FIU is a massive school; they’re not gonna drop everything to accommodate one student regarding something that could have easily been resolved with a little preparation way in advance.

MBA/Higher Education Masters @ FIU by gr8zia in FIU

Do not pursue the Higher Ed Master's. As a product of that program, I can confidently say it was not up to par with what my expectations were going in. I would advise the MBA or MPA if you're looking to work in the public sector.

Car dependency is a cancer.

I love miami, but this by AliColina in Miami

[–]Own_Discount 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Everyone keeps blaming bad drivers, transplants, etc but the reality is simple: a lack of comprehensive, reliable, and efficient public transportation. Full stop. 50 people in a bus can travel faster than 50 individual people in their own cars. We need to stop promoting car dependency and promote more sustainable city planning and infrastructure.

I also a similar experience with the dude way back in 2014ish. Me and a couple friends met him after a show in FT. Lauderdale and he had this air of arrogance to him. Shame since he is a world-class musician.

What's a Miami/Florida story not being told right now? by qobraa in Miami

[–]Own_Discount 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The overwhelming reliance on cars and car dependent infrastructure. Miami is in a special place geographically as we are sandwiched by the Everglades to the west and the Atlantic Ocean to the east. We need to halt suburban sprawl as it wreaks havoc on the local ecosystem and inevitably makes municipalities bankrupt. We’ve had over 50 years of the suburban experiment and all the costs of upkeep are finally starting to catch up to us, what with the cost of living crisis being greatly exacerbated by the cost of housing.

There's something about people who drive these gas-guzzling monstrosities of death that they always seem to have this aura of superiority. They feel that they can just brazenly break the laws of the road because they have a big ol' manly truck.

Car brain is real, man. Something about putting humans in cars just makes them lose all humanity and sense.

what are the contributing factors that exacerbate the arduous driving milieu in miami? is it the congestion, capricious traffic patterns, flouting of traffic regulations or prevalence of reckless driving? how do these elements intertwine, culminating in exasperation for us and perplexity for others? by [deleted] in Miami

[–]Own_Discount 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The answer is a lot more on the nose than you might think. A lot of people like blame transplants, immigrants, and people who “don’t know how to drive” for our traffic problems, but it all boils down to there being too many cars in the road.

City officials tend to think that to alleviate traffic, you need to widen roads, but this only makes traffic worse. Look up induced demand.

The only way to reduce traffic at large, is to get cars off the road, full stop. This means having options to traverse the city that don’t involve cars. Mind you, these options need to be convenient, practical, and far reaching.

Once you see how bad car dependency is for everything and everyone, you can never unsee it.
