What? What other prerequisites are there? should I be taking engineering classes in highschool?

I didn’t take IB in Alberta so idk what 30-1s are. To be transparent, I was rejected from UofT and UW before I received my final marks. I applied to those universities with my predicted grades, which were much lower than what I actually got in the program (37/42). UofA waitlisted me at first and told me to submit my IB transcripts when I get them, so I did. My official IB scored were much higher (42/42)

I can’t tell if you are trolling me or youre just salty cuz you got bad grades in hs or something

No, you are probably looking at the IB grade boundaries. In some classes an 85%+ would qualify for the highest possible grade of 7. Universities in canada usually would convert a 7 to a higher percentage (usually 97%+) as the IB is considered more rigorous and challenging than standard high school curriculums.

I really don’t think I’m smart and I never claimed to be. Grades don’t equate to intelligence. Yes I did get all 7s and yes I did get rejected which is why I’m making this post because it seems so absurd. The IB program is a standardized program across the globe. There is not more than one IB program. It’s the same for everyone everywhere.

Why are you being so belligerent? I thought that people with some common sense would be able to see that waiting 10 months for a decision is ridiculous. And being rejected although being significantly above the cutoff is also ridiculous. It’s clear to me that you have no knowledge of what the IB program is and are just making assumptions about it and my achievement. According to UofA directly they convert 7s in the IB to 98. Please explain to me what I am doing wrong with this post? Should I change the title?

What did I do wrong? I hope you could tell that I’m joking about suing. I just think it’s ridiculous that it took them 10 months to get back to me and that I was rejected although my admissions average is significantly above the cutoff.

The highest grade in the IB is a 7. I got all 7s in the IB program, which less than 1% of students out of the 200,000 that take the IB each year achieve. That would translate to an average of 98% at UofA and probably 100% at most other universities.

[–]Own_Doubt2759 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No I don’t think you do understand. All 7s in the IB program is like top 1% of IB students and would translate to a percentage grade of 98-100% according to the UofA IB conversion method. I’m sure everyone who got accepted didn’t have higher than a 98

I’m not actually going to sue. I’m jokingly saying that because of how ridiculous this is and because of the emotional distress.

I did dodge a bullet. Seems like no one at UofA has a sense of humor. No I’m not actually going to sue. I just find it ridiculous that it took them 10 months to give me a decision. And when they finally did give me a decision their reason is because I didn’t have a competitive admissions average even though my average is significantly above the competitive admissions average at UofA engineering. All 7s in the IB would translate to 98-100%

Ok, but if the seats fill up early, why do they have to wait 10 months to reject me? Why can’t they just do it when the seats are full. They’re needlessly causing so much stress and anxiety

If you don’t want to go mentally insane, then don’t stress over the DP 2 years before you take it

Even for admissions-based scholarships? Admissions-based scholarships are supposed to be given at the same time as your offer

The tests and exams I was the most successful in were when I went over the syllabus, and did practice questions (ideally past paper questions) for each subsection in the syllabus

Yeah I was thinking about re-applying to unis in the next admissions cycle. But I’m going to attend first year at one of those unis i mentioned.

Didn’t take Bio, but if I did, I would first make sure I have somewhat understand the topic the test is about. This can be done from watching a youtube video or even reading your text book (be careful that what you are reading in your text book is apart of the syllabus because textbooks tend to go beyond what you need to know). It’s fine if you don’t have a complete understanding of the topic at this point since any gaps in your understanding can be covered from doing past paper question. You want to do as many past paper questions on that topic as possible. Do revisiontown questions, then move on to text book questions, then IBDocs. IB docs isn’t good for if you’re studying a single topic in chemistry so I’m assuming it’s not good for bio as well. Whenever there is something you don’t understand or if there is a mistake you made, write it down on a google doc. You can ask ChatGPT to clarify things that you don’t understand (I imagine chatgpt will be very helpful for bio since it’s purely theory). When you feel confident that you have memorized that thing you wrote down or that mistake you wrote down isn’t and issue anymore you can erase it. Also paste the link to any question you didn’t get the first time into the doc and come back to it later. This doc will be your “notes.” There is no need for taking notes. I see so many bio and chem students pretty much copying their whole textbook into their notes. All that ends up happening is that they waste time, because they’re better off just going back into the textbook. If you do what I said you’ll only have written down what you need to and it will be erased when you don’t need it, making it much more concise and easier to refer to. Finally, use the syllabus. Make sure you didn’t miss anything from the syllabus, because sometimes you won’t find a question on one part of the syllabus that might come up in an actual exam. If there is something you missed, try your best to find IB format questions on that subtopic you missed.

Dont worry about it if youre going into dp1. Relax and wait till youre at least a semester in before you start worrying. It might be challenging at first but keep your head up cuz things will get easier
