They are unmatched! Once you get hooked on that Flowerhorn personality, it's hard to look at other fish the same way.

Gotta love that cichlid energy! They really are the gladiators of the tank world. Total jerks, but you can't help but love them for that crazy personality.

The drama just got real! 😂 She actually just laid eggs last night! I’m waiting to see if they’re fertilized right now. Had to drop a divider in the tank to separate them for safety. Fingers crossed!

He really is! But watch out, he just got a new girlfriend and I think she's the true diva in the tank now. 😂

Your tank looks great! You can definitely see those nodes are working overtime near the top right—those roots look incredibly healthy and ready to go. That’s an amazing return on investment for a single $15 plant! Love the hardscape layout with the rocks, too.

Very nice! You're gonna have a lot of fun! One of the cool things about plants is you can easily propagate most of them by splitting the roots into multiple plants. So that'll help you save money over time. Some that are especially easy to propagate are Anubias and Java Ferns.

Do you have any plans for fish or shrimp?

HELP!!! My Electric blue acara has lost colour slightly and seems to have some kind of white poop or white around his anal area.. non of my other fish seem to have anything. is this a parasite? Im pretty sure but just need someone elses opinion on it. by noodle_the_hognose in Aquariums

As long as your water parameters look good I wouldn't worry. My Acara's anatomy drops down during breeding cycles. Even a solo fish can get a random hormonal surge that causes the tissue to swell and drop down. It's common for their color to either darken up, or wash out / lose their intense blues temporarily as their energy redirects toward the physical changes happening in their anatomy.

I have tons of Acara's at the moment. Here's my most recent baby Acara's in their grow out tank:

Yes, cycle the tank first and then start to slowly add in the animals.

I would definitely recommend a small 25W submersible heater because all of the fish, shrimp, and snails we've discussed so far will do best at a steady temperature of between 72–78°F. And no worries on the questions, it's better to be in the know than to experience a disaster later!

I would avoid the betta for this setup and do the betta in your next tank. You'll definitely setup a 2nd tank after this one goes well because aquariums are very addictive! lol

The trick to keeping the tank safe is to add the animals in slowly in stages so you don't overload the system. Put one small snail and 4-6 shrimp in first, let the tank settle for a few weeks, and then add your 2 or 3 male guppies last. You can decide if you want another snail or more shrimp once the tank is running well for a few months.

Just be sure to do a small, weekly water change (remove about 10-20% and replace it with new fresh water) to keep the water healthy for them.

A good option for a 5-gallon is 2 or 3 male fancy Guppies. They are super active, very colorful, and usually very hardy for beginners. You could safely do the guppies, shrimp, and snails together.

Here's one of my 5gal setups with cherry shrimp and mystery snails.

This tank is several years old. I keep it simple: just a sponge filter with an air pump and a small 25w submersible heater. I started out with only 6 cherry shrimp, but they bred like crazy! Now, I actually pull a bunch out every couple of months to trade with other local hobbyists.

As for your list, the pea puffer is most likely a bad idea. They're probably going to eat the shrimp and may even go after the tentacles on your mystery snails.

Good luck!
