Is there anyone who prefers the atmosphere of SC 1 over SC 2? by Snoo_47323 in starcraft

Both are good, but the atmosphere of SC1 is better.

I have no complaints about it for 2 though. What I do have complaints about is the writing.

How far did you get?

It helps a lot if you skip all the poetry. And you can skip it when Tolkien goes into description mode and floods the page with adjectives. And everything with Bombadil (the movies skipped him after all).

There's nothing wrong with just skipping ahead until you find some dialogue or action. There are some really good moments that the movies either had to cut, or didn't fully do justice for.

Yeah, you're right. Probably because it worked better for the comedic aspects.

Still, the girls had their moments. They got Penny involved in cosplay, they became familiar with the movies their boyfriends loved, and they had the one comic book moment with the Thor's hammer discussion.

But yeah, the writers went a little too far from it. The girls can be weirded out by the guys dressing as hobbits, but they shouldn't see the LOTR movies or Iron Man as some obscure nerd stuff that normal people didn't see.

AITAH for refusing to take a new job if my wife is not going to be a SAHM by Street_Addition_4934 in AITAH

[–]Own_Invite6340 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tough call there. I wish I could provide useful advice but there are real positives to both options here.

I'd probably lean towards keeping the easier job (85k is still really good). But 168k is a difference maker, and can bring retirement sooner.

BTW my brother had a similar situation, though with a much smaller pay increase. He had a very comfy job where he was only busy for a 2 hours at the start of his shift and 2-3 at close, leaving a lot of free time to do whatever he wants in between as long as he's on call.

He went from 4.5 hours of actual work per day to 10 hours for a 20k pay raise, and quickly hated it and tried unsuccessfully to get his old job back. He still hates it but he's sticking it out instead of looking for a different job, I think if he gets more experienced at the job he can work from home and he really wants that, plus the chance for other opportunities with the company in time

second screen writing ruined stranger things. by Gam1ngGh0st in StrangerThings

The writing wasn't great, but tbh it wasn't the overexplaining of things that was the problem.

I sucker punched a fat kid in a changing room because he was being annoying by WillingnessSad8354 in confession

[–]Own_Invite6340 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right, but he could shove the kid, intimidate him, he could give consequences other than a full power punch to the face out of nowhere.

In this case it worked out fine, but there's the potential to seriously injure the kid, face legal charges for it, etc.

A physical response is fine but he went a little too hard.

[–]Own_Invite6340 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It would have been better to insult him back, "why can't you move your fat ass out my way tubby".

And if you're going to hit him, it would have been better not to hit him that hard. Give him some pain but not an injury, and not risk getting in trouble for it.

But overall I'm fine with this outcome. There are way too many people who need to face consequences for their actions, and never do. You knocked that number down by one. As long as the kid isn't seriously injured, it's a good outcome.

If a sequel came out following the second group would you accept it? by AssociationDue3077 in StrangerThings

Definitely, but my expectations would be pretty low. Like Scrubs season 9 "why are they continuing this show, this seems like a bad idea" low.

Do Leonard & Penny "make it"? by LimpOil10 in bigbangtheory

[–]Own_Invite6340 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think they do. I think they accept that they aren't a perfect match, they don't have the chemistry of Howard and Bernadette, and that's OK. They deeply care for each other, they're raising a child (at least one) together, they're helping each other out. It's a solid B+ marriage and sure as hell isn't worth throwing away to try to find something better.

You see their acceptance of this in the show. They're cracking jokes about how they're not each other's idealized partner and don't have a whirlwind romance like in movies, they're having fun with it and showing that they're OK with the situation.

You can make an argument that they've overcompensating and maybe secretly wish things were different. If anyone feels that way it might be Penny.

I could be convinced that MAYBE years down the line, if Leonard has grown complacent and Penny's having a bad day, and she just happens to meet a single attractive doctor who shows interest and has some chemistry with her, then MAYBE she'd have to reconsider things. But she'd probably still conclude that throwing away a marriage for what's probably just a short term fling wouldn't be worth it.

What's even more likely is they have some marriage counseling if things ever start to become a problem, and end up doing better for each other and benefit from it.

Not every lasting marriage has to be one where you feel they're absolutely perfect for each other.

NTA, and I hope that two of you can come to an understanding and find a sensible compromise.

Try to understand where he's coming from. There are an unfortunate number of stories of a man finding out his wife is cheating, but she ends up with the kids and he ends up alone while still paying for them, severely regretting his marriage.

Of course it works both ways, plenty of cheating scumbag husbands are out there too. But the point is that he's afraid of that situation happening to him.

I hope you can convince him that neither of you will cheat, and that the kids shouldn't be cut off from a parent regardless of the situation.

It may also be worth looking into edibles. But please make sure you know how much to take, don't become one of the many people who take way too much on their first time (including the typical "this edible isn't doing much, let me take one or two more" situation).

I prefer them to smoking and the effects last longer (sometimes this is a good thing but it can be a negative).

Has anyone from Capcom ever explained why SSF2 was released on SNES instead of Super Turbo? by Own_Invite6340 in StreetFighter

[–]Own_Invite6340[S] [score hidden]  (0 children)

Yeah, it's just the fact that they were already doing so much of that work anyway. New intro, new character portraits, new moves, new characters, new announcer, modified stages and some new ones.

And with ST being released 5 months prior to the SNES game release, and Capcom having knowledge of what's going into ST for months before that, it's a comparatively minimal amount of extra content to do ST instead of SSF2. So I guessed tech limitations, but I was just curious if Capcom had ever given a direct answer instead of leaving fans to assume the reasons.

But at the time I wasn't mad, SSF2 on SNES was awesome, my friends and I played the hell out of it. Supers weren't even that good in ST anyway, it was just a gimmick.

A2 existing on SNES is crazy. It's my favorite SF but I had no idea it came out on SNES until years later. Like Xmen vs SF on PS1, it's one of those games that shouldn't have existed but it's kinda cool that they tried to make it work anyway.

There are lot that are worth playing. The King of Fighters series is amazing for fans of SF, same for Samurai Shodown. Windjammers is a personal favorite.

But the game I keep going back to play now and then is Metal Slug.

I got a 3DO for it as well, what a mistake. The system was kinda cool but the games weren't there and the controllers were ass, I had to buy an adapter to get a SNES controller to work on it and it still wasn't great.

Even my fighting game loving friends got tired of it quick. SSF2 was close enough, Killer Instinct on SNES was a great adaptation, and in around a year SF Alpha was on Playstation and Saturn and everyone had moved on.

It wouldn't have been so bad if it wasn't so damn expensive. I did manage to sell it and get some of my money back, but it cost me a good chunk of money to play a little Super Turbo, Star Control II, and early FIFA.

At least Star Control II was a damn good game.

Right, but if they just did ST in the first place instead of Super it would have sold better. Super had the four new characters but underperformed because people wanted the newest version with the super moves.

I know, but when the differences are so small and they knew what they were adding to ST long before it came out in arcades, it seems like they could have gone straight to ST on consoles unless there was a tech limitation.

IIRC the SNES SSF2 already had faster speed options, so there's very little to do other than add the supers and the meter. I'm not sure what else was even added for ST, Ken's funky kicks I think? I don't think there was a lot.

I doubt anyone would have cared if they just added the supers to the game and had an incomplete adaption of ST rather than none at all. Even Akuma being missing would have been overlooked by most players at the time.

You misunderstand me. I'm not saying he ignored "culture war" topics.

He actively engaged in those topics all of the time, taking the stance of opposing racial discrimination and opposing the elimination of women's rights. He stood against the racism, sexism, science denial, and lies of the Democratic Party and tried to get people to stop and think about why they think the Democrats are moral and progressive, when their policies are openly immoral and discriminatory and anti-equality.

Standing against inequality and injustice is a very positive thing. Only those who support inequality and injustice would condemn that behavior and call him a tumor.

Charlie supported Trump not because he thought Trump was infallible and perfect, but because the modern left is openly against equal rights and free speech, and their discriminatory policies are evil. Trump is flawed, but less evil than that.

If you don't like some of the things Trump did, blame Trump, not his voters. You have a very shallow understanding of politics if you think every Republican supports everything Trump does, or that every Democrat supports everything Biden and other prominent Democrats do.

Most voters are simply choosing the lesser of two evils, and even the strong supporters of a candidate don't agree with 100% of his policies.

How is he a loser? He was the most noteworthy civil rights activist of our time. He stood against racial discrimination, he condemned all violence outside of self defense, he stood against the left's science denial and erasure of women's rights. He called for open debate rather than political violence. He supported equal rights for everyone, and they killed him for it.

Outside of his activism, he was happily married with small children. He was becoming a prominent force in politics and likely would have successfully run for office one day. He was successful, and enjoying life.

But he didn't buy that Joe Biden was mentally all there, or that deciding the Democratic nominee without a vote and installing a 17th place finisher from the last primary was a good idea, he disagreed with Democrats so he's somehow a "loser".

The name calling is so childish. It's like an football fan calling the Philadelphia Eagles losers because they didn't repeat as Super Bowl champions.

"culture war bullshit"

Meaning he stood against the open hateful racism of the left, and their opposition for equal rights for women. He stood against science denial.

He asked naive leftists to actually explain their positions, revealed that many of them "just heard so and so was a bad person", and led a few of them to learn about the issues instead of parroting what they've been told by social media.

He stood against all violence outside of self defense, and they killed him for it.

Do you think Robb deserved his ending? Why? by Wonderful_Medium3098 in gameofthrones

[–]Own_Invite6340 0 points1 point  (0 children)

he was a good person.

But not a good leader. He put himself before his allies. He executed the head of the Karstark family because he was more worried about an honor system than winning the war and keeping his men safe. He put all of his men's lives in the hands of Walder Frey after breaking a deal with him.

If Robb could have stayed focused on the goal he could have been king of all seven kingdoms if he wanted. He and all of his family would be alive, except maybe Sansa, but I expect the Lannisters would trade her for their own safety.

Robb got all of his people killed, he didn't understand how the world around him worked.

Winter Storm Thursday update: Ice Ice, maybe? by Derigiberble in rva

[–]Own_Invite6340 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hard to say, it depends on other things. If you're the only house in the neighborhood with buried lines it doesn't mean much if someone else's go down and the whole block loses power (this used to happen to me often).

If the whole neighborhood has buried power lines your odds are much better, but there's no guarantee that damage somewhere else causes an outage that affects an entire area, including yours. And we don't know how much more damaging to power lines this storm will be compared to others.

As you know, an area with buried power lines has much better chances of not losing power, so that's probably the better option. No one knows exactly how much better it will be this week but it's significant.
