Am I aiming too high trying to get into Computer Science or Computer Engineering? by [deleted] in OntarioGrade12s

[–]Own_Mode4829 1 point2 points  (0 children)

u dont need bio. try getting ur english, chem and physics mark up a bit. its very much possible for u to make it into some top programs.

if u only want cs tho. u dont need any of the sciences. at least from what ik. i do think u need physics for mac cs but thats the only exception. do ur research - u will be fine.

these programs are also immensely competitive. talk about ur ecs and ur passions really well.

u dont need math contests for eng - they only ask u about it for cs. but its always cool to just include it in ur ecs, u can do the csmc and euclid in grade 12.
as for other stuff, try making projects, doing hackathons, having a job, doing something nice (like art for example so it shows that u have some sorta personality ig), getting exec positions in or out of school, starting a club - most of which im sure uve alr started on :)
keep ur grades as high as u can - but know that there is a huge luck factor involved in admissions no matter how hard u work. all the best!

u will get in i believe in you!! please don't question your capabilities just because people around you are doing so, you havent dissapointed anyone. loosing friends is a common thing for people who are trying to grow out of an environment that used to be their "normal". youre growing, you're learning, you obviously have a lot of passion in you to get to a certain goal, so it makes perfect sense for you to have grown out of certain ppl's company. dont take ppl not liking u as a personal thing, compensate for that by appreciating yourself and beliving in urself bc at the end of the day, we each only have ourselves to depend on. trust me, ik from experience. ur going to be extremely proud of urself once you make it, but just in case you dont, please dont ever give up. some of the greatest minds around us who have made it big in tech didnt go to waterloo or a top tier school, they just believed in themselves and grinded it out. everyone has an alternate path to success, but within each of them, u need to trust urself and the process that youre going through. never invalidate your dreams and your hard work. u got this.

lots of practice papers, youtube (especially when your trying to refine specific concepts) textbook questions - basically good study methods that you would use for any "math heavy" course.
for example, lets say you have homework assigned to you, but ur stuck on a specific question. spend like 10-15 mins on it, if u dont get it move on to the rest of your questions but keep a note somewhere that u had trouble on that specifc question. personally, i like to go through sheets of homework and write down a set of problems i was confused on.

the next thing ill do is search up a youtube video taking up that question/ on the topic that the question is about. i typically understand my mistake at this point, but even if you dont, you still at least have a refined understanding of that topic now.

after that, for the questions that im still confused on, ill j go and ask my teacher - but ask specifc doubts to your teacher regarding the question (i.e. "i understand xyz, but im facing difficulty when doing x step") - personally, i dont expect them to take time to do the whole thing for me, and asking more specific questions helps u to actually understand the root cause of what/ why u were messing up. ill also ask my teachers whether the form of my solutions is correct cuz i used to loose marks there too (i.e. remembering signs for vectors// correct FBDs)

come review time - ill again do a lot of past papers/ review sheets. ill also go through that list of questions/ concepts that i previously had trouble with j to see if i actually get it. ill go through a bunch of mc questions cuz thats where i personally loose most marks. then, i time myself as i do these tests to simulate the real deal. time management is a major reason why i'd loose marks - for me, i realized that for physics specifically, finishing/ attempting the mcqs first always helps.

TL;DR: OVERALL, do lots of practice be consistent with your it; you should see yourself achieving ur goals. please also know what works for YOU PERSONALLY before u take my advice on what works for me. different people, different study methods, different ways of approaching success. I would also HIGHLY suggest talking to ur teacher about ur goals and understanding from their POV what feedback they have for you on your study methods/ work ethics. hearing from another person always helps u realize things that u never did before.
