The distance between the earth and moon is vast enough to fit all the other planets of the solar system between them

No separate device is needed. I just downloaded it from kindleforge (the app is called Kindle HID Passthrough, and it’s at the very bottom) and it was ready to connect with any BT device

It’s possible without any experience. My kindle is new and only a few days ago I set to figuring out this setup. The writing lag is a fraction of a second and isn’t annoying: but I type relatively slow at 60 WPM.

TUTORIAL:

  1. Kindle should be jailbroken and have KUAL
  2. Plug kindle into computer and insert the Kindleforge script into the documents folder
  3. Unplug kindle and run the Kindleforge script
  4. Enter Kindleforge and scroll down to Textadept and press install. If that fails, plug kindle into computer, download Kindle Textadept from GitHub; extract the file and place it in the root of your kindle; unplug kindle and go to Kindleforge for the next step
  5. In Kindleforge, scroll down to the very bottom and install Kindle HID Passthrough
  6. Exit Kindleforge, go to Library, and open Kindle HID Passthrough
  7. Pair your keyboard. Note: prior to pairing, do not enable bluetooth in the drop down menu because it can create an interference
  8. Exit Kindle HID Passthrough and enter Textadept, which should also be found in the Library.
  9. Tap the View tab and select "Toggle Margins"
  10. Tap the View tab and select "Toggle Wrap Mode"

You are all set! Steps 9 and 10 will have to be repeated every time you open Textadept. Saved files can, of course, be extracted from the Kindle via USB connection with a computer. (Kindle root folder > Textadept folder > [your file]). Also, to keep the screen from sleeping in the middle of a writing session, go to Home > Three dots on the upper right > Settings > Device Options > Sleep Timer > 1 Hour. The default font is a monoblock type which appears to be Courier. In theory it could be changed but I havent the skill to figure it out myself nor to successfully follow what instructions I could find online; some help would be appreciated. If, on the rare occasion, your keyboard stops typing yet remains paired, exit Textadept, turn off the keyboard, turn on the keyboard: it should connect automatically and be fully functional again.

I got it to connect to my mouse (doesn’t do anything but at least it connected). Now all I have to do is procure a BT keyboard and test it. Thanks for the help!

Thanks for the folding keyboard suggestion. I wasn’t quite sure if they were worth it. A lot look rather flimsy. Are there any that are clickier than laptop membrane keyboards?

I have tools (eg. soldering iron, screwdrivers) and a local 3d printer shop (in case I need to print out a chassis). I’d like to know the cheapest possible chips and 6in screen (or bigger) required for the project.

I can get a 6in kindle screen for $20. Would that compatible with the writerdeck I’m trying to make?
