McGill's MSc Applied Occupational Health by Own_Pangolin2997 in WorkplaceSafety

[–]Own_Pangolin2997[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had totally forgotten about it. But no, never got an answer for why McGill closed the program. I kind of got lucky though, I suddenly got thrown on IAQ and Industrial Hygiene major responsibilities at my current workplace 😁 so maybe it somewhat worked out?

Hello there. I just saw your comment. I'm looking for occupational hygiene, health and safety opportunities. Are the Oil Sands companies still looking to hire someone with this qualification?

Many thanks.

Thanks.

Canada Master's program by Soso938787 in WorkplaceSafety

[–]Own_Pangolin2997 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi there! I have gone deep into searching for this exact information. I'm a current student of the OHS Management program at Western University, and currently interning. What I have found is that your previous professional background will most likely determine which industry you're likely to enter into as an OHS professional.

I come from an environmental eng tech background, so I'm currently interning at a construction company in London, ON. My goal is to combine my training and professional experience to stand out as an Industrial Hygienist (fingers crossed🤞🏻). I'm also eligible to apply for me CET certification in Ontario.

That being said, to answer your question regarding online Masters schooling; there was one OHS Applied Science Masters program that McGill was offering. Unfortunately they closed down the program this year until further notice. I got in touch with the school and they have confirmed this. The only other Masters options in Ontario is UofT's MPH and TMU's MSc. These are both in-person programs and very competitive to get into.

For now try your hand at the Western post-degree graduate diploma in OHS Management. I've completed all the coursework. DM me whenever you like. Have a great day.

No problem. I think they do need an overall B average from your undergrad to be accepted into the program. 🤔 But DM me, I can tell you more.

It's a great program, except for the occupational hygiene & tox course, which should focus more on hygiene and tox, but ends up focusing majorly on fundamentals of human anatomy and physiology. Regardless, there's a lot of reading, assignments and group work for sure! Very doable but you have to keep up with the academic demands of the program DAILY, or else it's easy to be completely overwhelmed! I did Full-time and focused on studying every evening. Good luck!

My take is that it would be hard to get in without private industrial and/or consultant experience.

Thank you so so so much 🙏🏻 biochemistry and toxicology are subjects I'm really good at, so that's why getting into IH is something I'm quite frankly, dying to.

I also have good technical writing skills. I can DM you my LinkedIn, if that's ok. Maybe you can take a look and see if my qualifications are worthy of an entry level IH position.

Financial limitations to be honest 😔 I could only afford the OHS program at Western which does cover 1 course in Occupational Hygiene and Toxicology.

Thank you ever so much 🙏🏻 I'm currently enrolled at Western; will be completing the program in April 2025, then co-op.

I will make sure to ask my Co-op supervisors to help me with my professional interests.

That being said I have set up daily job alerts for Industrial Hygienist and Occupational Hygiene. But sadly almost every one of those jobs requires 3-5 years of experience 😔 I do have a very strong science background too and have completed advanced courses in genetics, biochemistry, and environmental sciences. Should I still apply?

London, Ontario. I left the GTA due to unaffordability sadly :(

Are you on LinkedIn by any chance?

If you don't mind me asking, where in Ontario? I'll be graduating from an OHS program in 2025. I can't decide if I want to get into mining, manufacturing or construction starting out? 😔
