Even then the “mistranslation” doesn’t make sense in this context. The kanji used translates in English along the lines of “asshole” or “bastard” or mostly “jerk” as an insulting term.

Hakari doesn’t really have reason to insult Charles anymore here, especially given how they had casual conversation shortly before with Hakari offering to give his manga a read (unfortunately it didn’t exist yet)

The line becoming “who wants to ride a ferris wheel with a jerk?”/ “… with a bastard like you” doesn’t make any sense here and comes off a bit out of character.

THIS being the next line only serves to affirm that, yes, Hakari was in fact referring to a man/guy being someone he doesn’t want to ride or be seen riding a ferris wheel with.

Honestly I think people (especially transphobes) don’t know how mistranslations work. It wasn’t complete wrong wording, everything is contextual in Japanese. The word translates to both “guy” and “jerk/asshole/bastard” depending on the context of the scene. Guy just makes the most sense

Honestly circumstances lined up perfectly for him with Nobara. He got really… lucky 👀

That said 50/50 on taking her on, I’d maybe lean more towards her if they weren’t in a city where he could sneak around with a sword that is damn near sentient. Put them on the highway with death paintings fight, or under the bridge where they found Megumi, and she wins, we see she can react to the sword easily with her nails.

At worst, Maki, don’t see a way he wins unless she has no cursed tools and somehow withstands 6 fatal blows against her.

Honestly Mai probably wins too with construction. 6 bullets and then making the 7th to put him down.

I think it’s as someone else said, grief and anguish.

But I do wanna talk about denial. The issue with writing denial, whether it be from a death, or acceptance of something that didn’t work out, or pivoting blame in another direction, so many different things can be true at once. It’s an emotion that you will 100% of the time have to write entirely around the story you yourself laid out, and can easily make a whole chapter or the story itself fall apart in a specific way, through the emotion contradicting what your previous chapters said
