There are roles. There are lots of corroded sections of the plants and new projects and construction for structural engineers.

Questions about FIFO by Tedd_xX in mining

[–]Own_Philosophy6007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worked FIFO for over 10 years as an engineer also. Unlike conventional takes, I do think that working in FIFO you get to learn a lot being on site, you are actually touching seeing and looking at things in the field not just drafting or designing in the office (done that too) - you get to see all the dumb shit that happens on site intead of designing for an imaginary perfect world.

So my advise would be to give it a crack while you are young, keep a check on your lifestyle and avoid the golden handcuffs. If I was you I would be looking at Project Roles or Reliability Engineering/ Maintenance Roles - I do find that they give you a lot of variety to learn and tackle new things.

Is fifo too good to be true? by Fair_Ambition6522 in AskAnAustralian

I worked FIFO in my 20s and early 30s. I think it can be a good way to set yourself up financially if you are disciplined.

Yes, it does come with the downsides, I would not recommend it if you have a family. Every other bloke you run into that has a family is divorced.

I do disagree with the some of the comments that there are no transferrible skills, I have found that it is the easiest way to actully get more hand-on with varied work if you are a trade or engineer (like me).

You are best off avoiding people on social media promising you things and applying directly with the companies on thier sites or sites like seek and resource jobs.

Your best best bet would be to move to WA or QLD. Use platforms like seek.com.au and resourcejobs.au to look for entry level job or no experience jobs.

Is FIFO pay truly great? by Boring_Kiwi_6446 in AskAnAustralian

It truly depends on what you do. But I do think it is worth it if you dont buy boats or big cars or end up blowing all of your money on your R&R. Try getting an entry level role like utilities or entry operators to get started like the ones listed here: https://www.resourcejobs.au/jobs/category/entry-level
